So short story, pool built in 1999. I'm going to drain and and acid wash (probably a 30% solution). The steps and main drain are the issue. Problem is the steps have some good chunks of plaster missing, mostly a 3/16 layer that has broken off in small areas. I'm going to fix the lighting when I drain, but what to do with the plaster ?
From what I've read , most patches fail and end up going through the pump into the filter. Should I just grind the edges of the chips down so algae can not get a good grip or pool paint, or what is the goto product for plaster repair. I figure I will remodel/ replaster the pool in 2-5 years.
What does the RDP Brain Trust suggest ?
Do I bother trying to media blast the tile ?

I just helped a friend patch his plaster pool with a plaster patch he bought on line. I was surprised how easy it mixed up and applied. It has been about six months and looks like it is holding strong.

So mostly just want to clean up the stains on the steps and at the main drain area. The plaster chips always seem to have a bit of black mold on the edges. I don't want to trap or give an environment to promote that.

That Plaster is so bad it will likely start popping all over the place as soon as you drain it.
Best bet would be use wet/dry sandpaper under water and sand edges down.

If you drain and acid wash you gonna need more then just some small patches.

If you drain, patch and paint you’ll be lucky to get 2 years out of it.

Best bet leave it alone, and save everything you can that Plaster needs replacing
