Here are 3 rudders 2 are about the same and then one, someone cut a bunch off. It came off a 20 foot Campbell. I drove the boat with smaller rudder and then had another Campbell with the larger rudder they turned about the same.

what would be the benefit of making it smaller? ImageUploadedByTapatalk1453254999.505974.jpg ImageUploadedByTapatalk1453255035.794290.jpg

Taking trailing edge off the rudder may not have changed the turning characteristics but it probably took a bunch of strain off the steering wheel and the rest of the system. Rudders are all about a balance between leading and trailing ratios to keep the system balanced, Then you can talk about performance, or vice-versa....

Those cracks do not look bueno at all, i would be replacing the rudder pronto.

All of those 'bronze crap things' are junk . 4130 or 316/304 rudders should be 'blanchard ground' to achieve a 'even true wedge shape' and positive control . Most everything depends on how the boat was rigged, when it comes to how the boat 'handles' with a given rudder . Many shorten the depth of a rudder, with the theory that this will reduce the 'drag' on the boat and make it faster . This is a 'fools paradise' .

IF the boat were actually running well, shortening the rudder would not be needed .

Call Glenwood or Barber welding and buy a real V-drive rudder .......... (1 1/8" for cruisers under 125 MPH)
