I was just shipped some new trailer tires. One had a small brad through the sidewall.

They are sending me a replacement tire. They said to keep this one. Would you patch this and use it as a spare?

Did it go all the way through? Post a pic of the inside.

Well that sucks. 😔

Due to the sidewall flex, no patch will stay in place for long, so that makes it a bad candidate for a spare, cause you have no idea when and where it could fail.

Most of your driving is at times hot desert roads. That's another strike against a patch lasting.

Chuck it and find something else to worry about. 👍🏼

Just buy a new spare, those tires are not that expensive to chance it. I’d think sidewall flex is the challenge with any patch there. The best I’d do would be to keep it as a second spare for long hauls - maybe.

I've had a few tires patched at a tire shop (national brand), but they will only patch the thread not the side wall. guess your doing it yourself ?

I'd run that with a patch all day long..........

I have 2 tires on my Baja with plugs stuck through the side wall, and they have never been an issue.

A patch on a spare tire, no problem

If your life insurance is up to date you make the call, however I would just toss it...

The current spare is 6 years old, 0 miles, stored out of the sun.. trying to think of which spare is worse lol.
Think of it like this. You're out on 130-degree asphalt in 117 degree weather have a blowout and you just change that tire. Get back on the road only to make it another 20 miles down the road and your spare tire fails. Now you're left out there with no spare. What's your peace of mind worth? I would buy a new tire

Dual axle 18Ft enclosed.
When you have a fucked up fender/side of the trailer...just remember you saved $80. Had a patch right at the edge of tread/sidewall on a boat trailer..was an emergency as a new tire was 2 days out where we were. It blew 20 miles or so outside of El Paso where I could go and buy a spare (which I had to). It destroyed the fender when it blew.

Nope. Too much sidewall flex for a patch to hold. Nothing worse that having a spare tire fail you after you already had to change a flat.

When I was a kid the gas station used to toss a match and start a fire on the installed patch, it looked cool, I'm not sure what it did.

I've plugged the tread area MANY times with zero problems when told plugs are bad... I have never plugged a sidewall.

I now patch the treaded area from the inside with a plug/patch thingy, that would be my choice if I HAD to patch a sidewall.

Good catch.
I’d run that as a spare no problem after slapping a patch on the inside.

Tire shops won’t patch it for a reason.

Buy a new tire.

Only on a site where people buy 40k SxS that don’t exist will you find a cheap ass that wants to plug or patch a sketchy tire so they don’t have to spend $200-300 on a new one lol.

Wow, that one really hurt.😔😢
Don't feel bad, my newest car is 16 years old...

BTW, just did a set of rears on a Freightliner today...tires are up 25%, and finding "sets" is getting a bit tougher for those trucks they say aren't running. Patch the tire, consider it Cuban Car Care 101.
