But he was OBTUSE.

GF's daughter looking for a new car this past weekend. I couldn't let her fend for herself with the dealers....so I got involved 😇

She wants a compact SUV, Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-30, Subi Crosstrek, Hyundai Kona, etc. She's not high maintenance just wants a new car and can afford it. Works for casino and has 803 credit. Has a '14 FIat 500L clear title and 75K miles. Clean. CarHax offers her $6600. We go to Henderson Hyundai and test drive Kona. Not interested. It had cheap plastic feel interior. We go over to Honda and she test drive HR-V. She loves it. She wants BLACK on BLACK ONLY. WTF??? You live in Vegas your money, OK, fine. Turns out they have the only BLACK HR-V in the valley out of 4 Honda dealers with EX-L trim level. It's Saturday at 7pm and the Honda sales hack wants this deal on his monthly sales. I get that. The Hyundai sales guy was kool and I was too relaxed when we showed up at Honda. This guy was ALL the things shitty a car sales person is. Every question we ask he kept saying before he answered, "I'm not trying to be OBTUSE".

Well he brought out the one sheet form with #s and first offer was MSRP with $499 doc fee and $398 payment for 72 months @ 1.99%. (he never ask about the trade in) we just told him $6600 down. He just wanted ink on the contract. Liz (the buyer) says I don't want to be over $340. That poured gas on salesguys high pressure sales pitch. He goes to finance area, comes back and says if I get you this deal I need a signature on this offer worksheet and 3 referrals for my sales trainee, who had little involvement in the deal. When he lays the paper down, his hand is covering the entire paper except where he wrote $356 a month. I said let me check that out and I grabbed the paper. I said is this the for the same car???? That sent him into orbit. He went on and on about that and started berating me to the point I couldn't figure out what changed on the offer other than the payment. The numbers didn't add up. There were no add ons for etching, spraying the interior, etc. or other bullshit.

I told him, you know, this sounds like a deal under pressure and we need to discuss it. It's after 8 pm already and she has to work tomorrow. We don't want to be here to 10pm. She likes the car. We can come back Monday (new car dealers are closed on Sunday in Vegas). He came unglued. We got up and left. It was a shitty meeting. Liz trusts me and said if I (talking about me) say its time to go its time to go. She wanted the car. Told her she will get the car she wants. FYI the Hyundai dealer had all window stickers include a $3,999 market adjustment fee added to the sales price. Honda did not.

I went online and searched for Black HR-V in Vegas. Only one. I went to Costco auto buying service. They assigned me Honda dealer in Centennial Hills. Same owner as Henderson. Costco says she can save $1100 off of MSRP. Yesterday I called internet guy in Centennial and told him I wanted the car in Henderson. 2 hours later he had the car. I verified the VIN. Turns out the 1.99% financing is either or $1000 rebate. Told him we would be there before noon with a check. I told Liz to go to the credit union and join and apply for a loan first thing yesterday. 2 hours later she had a check. 2 hours after that she had the car, clean and full of gas. Credit union was 2.49%. Still better with the $1000 rebate. Payment $304 and they matched the CarHax offer but they didn't want to. LOL. Guy was bitching about CarHax over paying for used cars. Whatever.

Fuck Honda in Henderson.

The tool tried to play 4 square with you...

Its a car sales trick to try to make you think your getting a good deal when you say the number you want to focus on is the payment. - they just shuffle the numbers to get you want you want but it never ends up with them getting less - in fact, they often make more money doing that (which is why the do it!)

Sounds like you got her a good deal!

I told Liz we should have negotiated a flame resistant suit in the deal so she could drive that hot fucker in the summer!!! LOL

She actually parks in garage at home and work.

I had a black on black Trans Am. But in Vegas in the summer, any car is an unbearable oven to me. After 150 degrees what’s the difference.

I should add, it’s even worse with my denalI. Had an Escalade, avalanche style that cooled quick. Now with the long open space in the denali it takes 30 minutes to get cool.

Walk in, tell them what you want to pay, walk out in 20 mins if they don’t give you what you want. It works for a stress free transaction every time.
I’m sure if I googled it I could find out how car buying bullshit started but it should be like buying a new toaster. :p

I don't. 😄 Last new vehicle I purchased was 1999/2000 and personally knew the wholesale manager as well as the dealership owner🙂

Biggest key is to have the fortitude to leave if you feel like they are jerking you around and not let the "I have to have it" emotions lead you astray. Emotional purchases are often regrettable. Don't grocery shop when you got the munchies.

HAHA - I did that once to a sales guy that was an idiot - bought the car at a different dealership then went back to look at car mats in the parts dept. in his dealership just so I would run into him and rub it in.

Told my wife, take an egg timer, pull it out and make a big deal about setting it for 45 minutes. Simply say if they cant get a sales contract to you with an agreeable price before it goes ding you will walk. Then watch em sweat.

I did it as well to guy when buying a new tuck 10 years ago or so. He was supposed to call me on Monday, never did. I rolled up the next Saturday and asked him if he liked my new truck.

It was funny watching him trying to read the VIN number through the windshield.

This x1000 they have to want to sell you the car more than you want to buy it.

The ONLY thing that matters when buying a car is what is the price of the vehicle. Monthly payment, down payment, etc doesnt matter. They dont need to know what you have in your pocket, how much you can afford, hell they dont even need to run a credit check. You tell them NOTHING. Price of the vehicle only. They're not there to be your friend, they're there to sell a car and put money in their pocket. If guy pulled out the 4 square I'd just leave. I've helped a friend buy an acura, got all the way to where we were about to sign the long form.... called another dealer asked if they'd knock $500 off the price, they agreed and we got up and left and got it for $500 cheaper. Hell they even threw in a car cover for free. "This is the lowest I can go..." Well you just lost a sale. Congrats.

The interest rate and OTD price is what you need to know.

I did that to Glendora Chevrolet back in the day. Went there in my 89 Fox Body and wanted to take a look at the new 1997 S-10 with the V6 Vortech. Found one I liked and wouldn't let me test drive it. Bought one that weekend from Gunderson and went back to Glendora. I walk in the showroom looking for the sales guy. As I was talking to the front desk girl that I was in there earlier in the week, the sales guy yells, "that was me, you're the kid with the Mustang" to which I said yep, come look at my new truck since you brushed me off.

Made it all the better that he took ownership prior to me dropping the bomb.

Many years later I went to the Acura dealer in West Covina as they had a GS450 or something like that. Wouldn't help me either as a 22 year old in a lowered S10. So I grabbed the girlfriend's dad's 360 Modena and rolled back over there. Then they wanted to help. lol

You want to know the vehicle sale price..........before any fees, taxes, mop&glows or any other bs.

This is it! always negotiate the actual price of the vehicle (excluding fees), then talk interest rates (if using their financing)

I've always had some sort of "contact" to deal with when buying a new car. Last new truck I bought was actually through Jason photogluoe(sp?) here on the boards, and that was the smoothest transaction ever.... IDK how they even made any money on the deals. It was a 2005 CHEVY 2500 dmax 4x4 loaded etc etc Sticker price on it at the time was 52k... I ended up getting for around 48k OTD delivered to my office.

Last 3 cars went through the internet/fleet sales, they have a set minimum price, no bs, even the finance guy in the last car buy was literally 90 seconds on extended warranties, protection packages, pre paid maintenance, etc. my fleet guy had already told him, “no add ons”, super stress free and in n out in 20 minutes.
However we spent almost 2 hours going over the car, and still do not know or understand all the nannies and programs on the thing (new Benz) , so ironically trying to figure out this computer car took as long as most back and forth traditionally haggling that goes on and the actual purchase 20 minutes.....
Last 2 cars were ordered with exactly what we wanted, internet/fleet managers and still got a very good discount from msrp
and wifeys Benz I ordered with no deposit, shipped form Germany on a handshake.....never expected that !

1985 I had to buy a truck to empty out my Grandmothers house as she had passed away. I didn't want or need a truck but Toyota of Corona had an ad running for a stripped reg. cab for $99 a month. I was there at opening and told the sales guy I was waiting for the owner (a friend of my mother's). We get to talking and I tel) the guy I want this exact truck in a Xtra cab model. No power nothing, 4 cyl., manual trans and windows, no a/c kinda deal. I figure maybe $10-30 more a month. He says "sure we can get you that for about $225 mo."
Thanked him for his time, waited for the owner to come in, a got a deal done in 10 minutes for $109 mo.

I knew how much she was gonna put down. I knew the interest rate and term. I knew the MSRP and I knew the tax of 8.1%. I ask him how much the payment would be with those #s. I had my HP-12c calculator to figure the payment. I know within a couple $s where the payment should be. Honestly, the $499 doc fee is bullshit and I should have argued that as well down to $149. But I didn't want to stress Liz out. There were 4 #s, price, tax, doc fee and $28.25 for title. She's paying DMV herself. When he brought the first offer with a payment of $398, it was just so far off I didn't even check the figures. I should have. I know he added some shit in somewhere, just not sure where. I was thinking he inflated the sales tax because we had already declined all the add on shit. We just told him it's too high. That's when he came back huffing and puffing and I need a signature and 3 referrals for this deal with his hand covering most of the paper before he even says what it is. It's $356 and that's it. There's nothing else that's flexible. I ask if this is for the same car, I think because when we declined the 1st offer, he says we have cheaper cars. He nearly shit a brick. My GF and Liz think the guy was on drugs. He was really over the top. I haven't bought a new car in a while and I was a little rusty.

So for points of clarification.
1. You knew the down payment of $6,000 but was that the value that you put on her trade? Or was it cash/check?
2. Also, was it the same car? If so, I think I would be a little irate if somebody accused me of switching out the vehicle when I didn't.

Years ago remember reading about a guy who went to Newport Beach Ferrari to buy a new Fcar, was first ignored and then insulted with something to the effect of “can you afford it “, left and went to the McLaren dealer down the street bought a new one promptly drove it right up to sales area and asked “how do you like my new Mclaren”?
The stunned dropped jaws from the sales folks was I am sure worth it !

She had an offer from carmax of $6600. She would trade it in to them if they matched or she would take it to Carmax and get the $6600. Her mom would have written a check for the down payment right there and Liz would have paid her back if she needed to sell the car at Carmax. Either way she would get the $6600. The Centennial dealer matched it.

It was the same car. I took a pic of the sticker when we were in Hendo.

If they add on after the sale price it affects the OTD. Sale price can get you in the door then they add window etching, paint protection, clear guards etc raising otd. Vehicle sales price plus tax and license both you can't avoid paying gives you OTD you want.
So sales price matters but OTD is what it is actually costing before interest. Sales price doesn't mean much if they stick a bunch of add on before tax and license.

Bottom line is the only number you care about. I don't let them know I have a trade in, or how much I am putting down. Here is the bottom line and that's it, let me worry about the other numbers.

Only go into the dealer to test drive , do ALL your negotiations online . The moment you step on the lot , you have lost leverage . Then get everything in writing and bring it with you . Any extended warranties can be purchased after the fact by a 3rd party at substantial savings . I can't believe that people buy extended warranties / service contracts that run concurrently with the manufactures warranty , get one that starts right after .

One of my pet peeves with my salesmen was never, ever judge a customer by its cover(aka pre-qualify). Talk and treat each the same.

My job takes about 40K miles a year. So I buy new every other year. I was getting screwed locally. Service was nice local. But not much room to negotiate. I started listing my options and what i wanted. Sent it to three or four dealers around my state. Told them i wanted thier best price out the door. Gave them a deadline. Holy smokes. It saves alot of money. I allowed my local to bid for a few years. He would always get mad that i didnt give him last look. I am sure many dealerships and car saleman dont like the method but it real money saved.

That's precisely why you want to know the sale price.
If you are price shopping all that matters is the OTD. Currently they are adding all types of bs fees on top of sales price. You can call one dealer and get a sales price 30k. Call another and 35k both can be same otd after the bs fees added by dealer at 30k. I can easily figure sales tax and license fees out of the otd price giving me the true sales price.

Tacoma I got for my Mom for Christmas was sales price $29K. OTD after there BS was over 40k. Making the sales price worthless to know.
