So I picked up this 79 21rc from the original owner and getting ready to start tearing into it . As of right now it’s got a 454 that’s .60 over and a trs outdrive . Plans are to get it all stripped , new interior , either repair some gel and freshen up or possibly re gel ( haven’t decided yet, needs to have some transom work done to put a new bravo on and hopefully have a nice little cruiser . It ain’t a v-drive but the price was right . Anyone have any experience with these 21s with an I/o ? Please feel free to chime in and give me some advice on it . I’ve only ever had cats and wanted to take on a project so here we go .

If it needs transom work, what about up dating and putting a outboard on it. Gain performance and interior space.
That’s what I’d do, especially if it doesn’t have reliable power already.

This ^^^^ is spot on with the 300hp v8 Mercury, less fuel consumption, drivability noise, more space it would make a grate family ski boat.

Years ago I re-rigged a 21RT w/ a 300xs ,18" Stainless Marine Bracket, box type for added floatation w/o a jack plate that boat rode and handled awesome and did 82mph.
I cannot share any info about a 21rc standard bottom OB but there out there Im sure a member will stop by shortly.

I have ridden in a SBC/Alfa drive setup in all kinds of water conditions and it seemed to ride & pound like any other runabout better but not by much, some of the newer 21RC's OD's had lead shots added to the keel area to help the ride and keep the bow down, yours's being a 79' might not have any added weight but i'm sure you'll soon find out.

Welcome to the Boards and to The Asylum o_O

Why not go Vdrive? you commented it wasn't as a negative, if you gotta get into the transom go for it. Admittedly my life has been all Vdrives, I own two and am a biased snob. I just love the way they look, I know the outboards are running circles around everyone today and the out drives are more efficient but V-drives are Bad Ass and noisy :)

I’m not opposed to the idea, I definitely would love to have a vDrive rather than an outboard . Being that I’m doing all the rigging myself I just need to see cost for cost what makes most sense

Thats a familiar gel scheme, it's exactly the same as the original gel on my '79 RC V-Drive.
