Found a boat, made a deal and picking up this weekend. 21' Lavey Craft. What should I know about this motor? I read somewhere here it takes premium gas. What else?

Post the engine serial number and I can tell you all you need to know . the 6.2s were made a couple different ways thru out the years.

6.2 MPI will run on regular. 320Hp. Normal maintenance and run for many trouble free hours. Like John just said, using the serial number he can tell you if there are any common issues or other things to be aware of.

I have one, an 04, so the “2nd gen”.

It will run great in that 21. They are close to bulletproof. No major issues with them really. And yea they will run on 87 just fine.

Is it the LS3 based 6.2? Or the sbc based?
If LS3 based there’s a few easy bad ass upgrades to push them to a truly bulletproof 500hp

I prefer the 6.2 over the 454s. Because you get a better HP to weight ratio for the most part.

Basically just a stroked 350, to get 377-383CU/ pending the year/set ups. With better components to get better HP. Very reliable from what I have seen over the years. Its not a 496... nope nope nope. But it gets the job done on alot of applications.

This is true, the 6.2 is almost 350 lbs lighter. The 6.2 is 5-6 MPH slower on top speed vs a 496 in my exact boat, and gets 1/3 better fuel economy. Unless we are racing up or down river at top speed, there is literally no noticeable difference in planing or acceleration power. Remember also the 6.2 usually has the 1.65 ratio drive that partially makes up for the difference in torque.
