Anyone ever hear of this? My some received a letter at his moms stating it’s required?

Registration for Men 18-25
Selective Service registration is required by law as the first part of a fair and equitable system that, if authorized by the President and Congress, would rapidly provide personnel to the Department of Defense while at the same time providing for an Alternative Service Program for conscientious objectors. By registering, a young man remains eligible for jobs, Federal student aid, State-based student aid in 31 states, Federally-funded job training, and U.S. citizenship for immigrant men

Yeah, it's not so common, common knowledge.

Basically if there's a draft you are registered.

If you don't:

Failure to register with Selective Service is a violation of the Military Selective Service Act. Conviction for such a violation may result in imprisonment for up to five years and/or a fine of not more than $250,000.

Oh yeah and this...

"you will not be eligible for federal student aid, federal job training, or a federal job."

I turned 18 in 78, but didn't have to register until 1980 when Jimmy Carter started it back up. And I had to write my Registration # on my security clearance every 5 years until 2015.
without it, I would have had to change my career path.

I remember filling mine out. I still have the card in my files.
If your son decides to go into the military, remind him not to use this logic:

Strange how both sexes being equal and all yet women haven't tried to fight for the right to register for the selective services .....

Yep, I signed the same paper 25 years ago. Oddly enough, more worried about being called to arms now than I was then...

Have more to lose now, but a lot more to fight for as well.

I'm from the sticks and this has been common knowledge forever. Of all of the conversations that come up this is confusing me. I registered practically on my 18th birthday and then enlisted when I was 21. What's funny is receiving letters about registration after serving on active duty.

You and I are too damn old, if they get to our numbers then we're fucked anyways.
The "Call" won't be made by the government in my case. I'm too old by their standards, but I know I'm in better shape than the average 18yo these days.
We're heading down the road of being fucked as it is...

I met a contractor overseas that never registered or served, he said its an issue sometimes but not a showstopper.

There was a window of time that registration was not mandated. I never had to register and have held top secret clearances.
Just looked it up and men born between 1957 and end of 1959 did not have to register. There was no draft board when we turned 18

I registered after it was reinstated in 1980. I was actually 19 or 20 at the time, but my birthday was after the 1/1960 date that they decided on as the start point.
I was convinced I would be drafted at the time, which I would have been fine with.

Yep, I remember goin down to the post office and filling out the form when I turned 18. It was actually a big deal then. kind of a right of passage when you became an adult.

I signed up in 2005 when I graduated, I was planning on enlisting at the time so the it was something everyone was telling me I needed to do.

Didn't enlist afterall, but at the time if the draft actually came I would have just enlisted. I would rather go in on my terms then someone else's.

I turned 18 when the Vietnam War was in progress. They had a lottery by birthdate. I was fortunate and had very high numbers the two years they did that, but would have served if called. My dad was a Marine in the South Pacific.

I really feel they need to reinstate the draft. The majority of young men these days could use it!

I went through an apprenticeship program when I was a kid for machining and one of the things I signed was an exemption from this.

During times of war machinists make weapons.. didn’t know that until they put the paper in front of me

Yes, it’s our civic duty as males.

What’s funny is being a Marine Recruiter and how many people in society don’t even know they’re supposed to do it. In high school these teachers teach these kids a lot of other bullshit but nothing about selective service. Like you I did mine and 18 and went in the Marine Corps 19.

I was a pretty dumb kid at times, but one thing I knew is that when I turned 18, I had better make sure that was filled out and filed, or my Dad would have whipped my ass! He retired Chief Msgt, and was disappointed I didn't enlist. So he pretty much told me it was the least I could do is make sure I'm registered for duty if I was needed.

Just checked on website. 1993, pretty cool they have the card you can print now and everything.
