I don’t recall seeing a thread here before on online machining services so I thought I would share my first experience with SendCutSend. Sometimes I see folks on here asking where to get stuff fabricated and machined, so I thought this might help some.

I’m a bit of a home wannabe fabricator. Have done some poor garage CNC machining, welding, plasma cutting, CNC printing and laser etching. I can design some basic parts in CAD with Fusion360.

I was checking out an online machining service called SendCutSend. Basically you upload your CAD drawing and they provide an instant quote to do a number of services out of a wide range of material. Laser cut, CNC routing, Waterjet, Bending, powder out…. So I gave it a shot. I uploaded a drawing I made for a spark plug wrench I was going to make to put in my dirt bike tool roll, I first prototyped it to make sure it fit using a 3D printer. Their quote was $12 to laser cut it out of 6061. To do it out of Titanium it would have been $85, I chose 1/4” stainless for $25, $31 with shipping. Sure, what the hell in the name of education.

I ordered it last Sunday afternoon. Within an hour I got an email asking why I had a filet in my drawing (oops). Monday I got an email saying it went into production, Thursday it shipped from Reno, Nv, arrived Friday.

The dimensions were probably +- .007” of my drawing. Had some sharp edges I had to debur. I'm probably not going to use it since I now can tell that 1/4" stainless is too heaving to lug around in my pack...I might try to get them to cut it out of carbon fiber...

Never heard of that, really cool for those of us that can't machine stuff, or can't do it well.

There’s also an outfit that does laser cut tubing radius sections that are notched. Pretty damn cool for building intakesetc.. I’ll have to try to find their address.

Interesting, now I have to learn CAD
It is easy. Reach out if you need guidance. Back in college our son had an interview with one of the largest architectural firms in Hawaii. I was offering to give pointers the night before. He laughed at me and said that he would wing it. Well he knew nothing, had to take a test and went on YouTube and got through the test and got the internship. This old man was taught a lesson that day…….🤪🤪🤪🤪

Oshcut is another place that offers this service. I've welded a lot of parts for customers that came from them. Always had good fits.

you gotta admit that we do live in a pretty impressive time when it comes to this shit. Your average joe and dream something up, mock it up in some 3d modeling suite, print it out in 3d for pretty much pennies, confirm and send the file off to have the production run done. My grandfather came from Scotland in 1918, worked as a tool and die maker, and spent the later half of his life engineering gas systems for the gas company down in LA. He helped engineer some of the gas lines that ran from socal to texas I believe.

he would have just been blown away if I could have explained this shit to him.

I didn't try it but I believe SendCutSend has some designing capability on their website, probably for simple stuff. The Fusion360 program that I use has a free version for non-professional users. Your software just needs to be able to export to DXF or EPS for them to use, I suspect those are common formats.

Thank You, I just may have to do that. I have a couple little trinkets I wouldn't mind getting made.

I will second https://www.oshcut.com

I have north of $10,000 in receipts from SendCutSend and OSHcut on my Schiada build and couple of car builds over the course of the last 5 years. SCS was awesome in the beginning. The best price and because they are in Reno delivery to my place in NorCal was usually next day after shipment. Turn time was almost always 3-5 days. They have grown rapidly since COVID, adding an operation in the East and service has suffered due to the growth IMO. I have had at least three orders that slipped into the 2 week range for cut, and one that drug out to 3 weeks. Most of my stuff is for personal hobby projects so the delays only cost me time but occasionally I will help a buddy out with design/fab work on a project and of course one of my delayed SCS orders was for someone else.

OSHcut on the other hand has become more competitive price wise, added more services (bending, threads, powder coat, etc.) and has never missed a ship date.

Just one old dude's perspective. If you are looking at SendCutSend, give OSHcut.com a look.

I've heard good things about SCS, but good to hear first hand experience.

I think it's pretty cool these guys are filling a market niche for everyone that can't afford 6 figure machines, or doesn't have the luxury of a local shop relationship to deal with nickel dime parts.

🤙

My buddy used SCS after he designed and patented his own bed rack system for overlanding. He is about to release it to full production in the shop he is running. It's pretty unique and gets a lot of attention at the overlanding meet ups.

SCS for the win, during and now after Covid they have had lead times increase but they are still worth it for one off stuff.

I need an 8" Paddle with a handle..like a ping pong Paddle with a round handle. Cut out of aluminum. If I could get my hands on a CAD drawing this would make a great service 👍🏻

George had flatbottom mudflap weights on his dually and we had talked about putting them on mine. He passed before either one of us did anything about it and I hear the truck was sold. This service could allow me to make my own and thats kinda exciting! But Im a computer dummy that knows nothing about CAD. Ill see if I can find a an old pic

Just tried SCS for 30 pcs of an obsolete copper buss bar that my old company refused to have run for a customer in Dubai. The local shops I deal with wanted 4-6 weeks lead time and the price was substantially higher than the last time purchased 4 years ago. SCS wanted 4 days till shipping and beat the four year old prices by a substantial margin. After Thanksgiving we'll be sending a dozen or so current STEP files to them for quotation.
