I had a couple 40 footers delivered 3 to 4 years ago. Paid $3100 for one with a roll up side door and a man door, $2900 for another with no side doors. Called the guy I got them from and he said they are $7800 now and that's if he can even get them. Yikes! He said they were still around $3K just two to three months ago.

Looks like I'll be stick building or doing metal.

Haven't you heard about the shortage? They can't get the chips to finish them.... or is it the ships?

This shortage effects pretty much everything......

Looking at this myself. I need to get one in the budget on a project and am not sure how to plan for this.
If I go for current prices, I could spook those involved and not get it. If I go more realistic and they don't drop.......

I worked with the guy that began the mobile storage biz back in the late 80's when he saw the buildup of the containers in the US from the trade imbalance with Asia and began purchasing hundreds of them for under $2k each for a 40 when nobody wanted them except for the steel. He started renting them out at about $100 per month to construction sites and departments stores and modifying them with side/rollup doors. They're metal boxes, last about 20+ years, require no maintenance, and just throw off cash... $2,900/$3,100 doesn't sound unreasonable for stock/modded, but $7,800 - ouch. Supply and demand rears its ugly head...

Just bought one for a job site with the roll up door, some electric and an AC unit. A couple of years ago it was like 4200, now it's 10-12k

No, the guy I worked with was the original Mobile Storage Group guy that came from Public Storage, he also branched out into portable sanitation (porta-potty) units a few years later. He did OK with the toilets, but those required maintenance and would wear out from use over time and were not as profitable as the steel box rentals.

Containers that would have been removed from service previously for age or damage are now being repaired and sent back to work due to shortages in the shipping fleet.

That has reduced the supply of rejects sold for storage units.

Supply and demand obviously.

Containers are in demand as most are sitting on ships outside ports waiting to dock and offload

We are looking for at least two 40's and can't find them. We have two. For our property in central Washington State. The building our offices and storage is in, being sold. We'll need the containers pretty soon or we might have to buy the building!

We are looking to sell a 40. Are you still looking for one?

Anyone looking for a used 40 footer we are looking to sell one we used for storage for about 10 years. Faded white/cream paint but water tight. Way less than $10k

My kid works for a large company. Lots of international shipping going on.
What he's hearing. Add this to the list.....
The truckers dont want to wait to be unloaded.
They dont want to haul empty trailers back to long Beach or where ever.
they're getting paid mucho extra to help get those loaded tankers unloaded and out of there fast.
So nobody want to haull empty cans back. Drop the trailer and leave. Way more $$$ hauling out full ones.
So, eventually, theres a vacuum. Tankers got no sea cans to haul back to Asia. To refill etc... etc...
They're renegoiating with the teamsters, extra pay for the Round trip. not just deliver and drop.
They say it could could take 12 to 18 months for settle down...
Thank you Joe.

My buddy's neighbour owns container biz, you can see his stock piled 6 story high on River Rd close to the tunnel. He just finished his 23K+ sq foot house on 5 acres next to my friend's on Sidaway Rd. So yes, container business must be booming. ;)
