Sink Handle

The last one I installed had a flange that went on the under side of the sink. It is real tight for me under the sink but I don't see how to get this one out. Pot metal handle broke this morning and need to fix it. Any help from the boards?

There's a T handle puller that will pull the cartridge out. They can be pretty tight in there.

So it just a compression joint. With the new one should I put a little silicone? I was able to turn it with channel locks but was afraid of damaging something. Not sure makes it no labels any where on it that I can see.
