who has experience on this as far as over seas living. Not looking to buy property but just live abroad maybe 6 months a year so a rental. Want a safe, low cost area to live that being American doesn't make me an instant target....lol

Not sure I want to do this but open a bit to it.

Whats your take?

You bored already?

Do you speak any foreign languages? I have a buddy that basically nomads around Europe and Asia full time, but he speaks a few languages, which helps.

Thailand.
Took the family there 8 yrs ago for 3 months.
Stayed away from the big cities and it was totally great.
I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

If you're not into an Asian experince, I'd start looking at Portugal.

Along these lines, I’d probably stay in Bali for a while. It’s hot and humid, but can be very cheap.

Had a GF from there.....might not be the cheapest place to go

Housing is STUPID expensive there, unless you go to the middle of bfe farm country, but then there is little supply.

Wealthy Chinese were offshoring their money for years buying houses that would sit vacant to the point where the govt put a complete ban on it. When wuflu hit tens of thousands of kiwis abroad made the choice to repatriate further straining a market that made San Francisco real estate look reasonable.

Learn to sail, buy a boat, vagabond the ocean.

X2 on Portugal. This was actually the topic of conversation at work the other day. Someone had really looked into the benefits of retiring out there. I had no idea, I just love going there. Was there last in December of 17. Talks of returning in 22. Some of these photos are from the mainland and the outer edges of Lisbon. Many of the others are from the Azores Islands of Terceria. There is a large military base that use to be an American Air force base. But I belive the US has all but phased out of there. The civilian aircraft use the same runway. They are use to Americans being around.

Been many places. Its a broad question and depends on your likes/dislikes, budget and if you're alone or have a spouse.

Central America, most the popular places like Cost Rica are over tourist priced and not that great, Nicaragua was a great place but you have to watch as there is civil unrest that can get ugly every so often. Beer, liquor and smokes are dirt cheap, that's why you will find many expats drinking and smoking their lifes away there, typically laying low from criminal charges pending state side.

SE Asia is good if you can stand the humidity, don't underestimate it it can be brutal to the point of debilitating. Depending on where you are prices can be very cheap. Caution most the beautiful girls are packin' a pee-pee.

South Pacific Islands can be fun and beautiful but expensive, spouse's typically will like the Islands. Some of them are pretty much ran by East Indians, so dealing with these snakes can put a damper things, always trying to get over on you.

Places like New Zeland and Australia, forget them you mine as well stay in the US. they are all screwed up.

If you search YouTube for “low cost of living countries” you pull go down a rabbit hole that’ll get you wanting to pack up tomorrow.

George Gammon of The Rebel Capitalist travels and mainly lives in Medellin, Columbia. It’s not the same country it was in the 80’s...

If I had my choice it would be Northumberland or Scotland in the summer. Good transportation options so if you want to go to Spain or Portugal (or other European countries) for a couple weeks, it is a short flight. Winters in the American Southwest.

Just curious...what happened to traveling around the USA - disillusioned? Too crowded in RV parks?

Lived in Hong Kong for 3 years, ‘09-‘13. Traveled all over SE Asia. Thailand would be my pick, if that part of the world interests you. The most kind, welcoming and humble people I’ve ever met.

that one keeps popping up for sure

I’d look at costs rica and Columbia.

I spent some time in Hong Kong, absolutely amazing place.. they cook everything in some kind of different oil though and the smell was awful.. I think I lost 15-20 lbs in the week or two I was there.. I’m not kidding that some of the restaurants were so bad just walking by them I threw up in the gutter. I suspect you’d eventually get used to it though.

You should really try a few places if you can. If you want cheap I am serious about Slovakia. Castles everywhere. Hotels were only $30, and dinner was $7. Don't know rents but guessing in line with those numbers. I spent a month there last summer and loved it. Check out Trencin. Can easily get to Austria, Hungary and Czech Republic. All within a couple of hours. Central Europe will be a cold winter!

Agree on Portugal. Cost might be an issue though. Thailand is fantastic. Maybe check out Vietnam as well.

If you plan on getting around, beware on fuel costs. The US has some of the cheapest in the world despite what you're fed by the media.

Costa Rica has beautiful beaches, cheap living, nice people. Houses near the beach rent real cheap. I thought it would be kind of like Mexico, I was wrong. Locals were super proud and happy with their country. There was a place that rented SxS’s right at the beach, I thought what a great setup. Horseback riding on the beach, white water rafting, atv’s ,all kinds of fun stuff.
We went to: San Jose, Arenal, Monte verde and the place I would go to stay for a while , Punta Islita on the Guanacaste coast.

I’ve been a few places where it felt like they don’t like gringos/Americans. It felt like Costa Rican’s wanted tourists there to spend money obviously, but also wanted to show us how nice it is and the pride they have for their country. Never felt unsafe or like a target there with wife and 2 kids.

Actually living in a country is 100% different than visiting there. We lived in Italy for about 4 years, due to my job. It was doable, but nearly everything we did was a bit of a hassle. Back then very few Italians spoke English, which made things more difficult. That is not the case today. Simple things like waiting in line for a car ferry was a joke. Italians refused to wait in lines, they would cut in front of each other whenever possible. It was expected. We never got used to that. We lived in a small sea side village on the Northern Adriatic. Minimal population in the winter. A tourist destination for wealthy Germans and Swiss in the summer. We had to pay the jacked up summer prices. That was not so with the locals. Most non Italians flew to the U.K. for any medical needs. My wife was in tears the day we arrived and then again the day we left after 4 years. But, we made it work. I was paid well and we were there to save money. My employer was paying for our apartment with a additional modest living allowance. Foreign living is likely better now. But, if you can afford it, visiting various areas for 6 months would be far preferable to actually living there.

dont think I want to go there budget wise. Gotta be $$$$$
Actually it is not at all. The exchange rate is 2 to 1 so your US money doubles. English speaking country a little smaller than Texas and the total Population is about 380,000 people in the whole country. And they want you to be there. The touristy areas are obviously gonna be a bit more expensive but there are surely VERY nice places to stay for much cheaper than you would think. We almost pulled the trigger last year and bought a 4 year old fully furnished 2 Bed 2 Bath home with Full Caretakers Quarters including garage and covered boat storage on a golf course across the street from a park on the Bay of Belize in Consejo Shores for 325K. Property taxes were $ 325.00 per year. And you hold title Fee Simple, same the US even as a foreigner.
We go every other year and have been looking at buying a 2nd home there and look every time we go down. Just cant pull the trigger on something that I can't go check on myself right now.

PM me if you want more info.

I had a linebacker ho and her friend try to hit me up in a casino with LuckyStrike. It was comical. Everywhere we went (tourist area) it was "Cocaine....marijuana....." told to us all over. Yes, you can get in trouble but you can anywhere. Gotta keep a low profile IMO

Barcelona....nice boating, nice beaches, diverse city between Barconeleta, Gothic, Ramblas, and Born districts... It is like the best of Cali beaches, the best of Mexico..food, drinks, laid back style.... (able to drink on beach (clothes optional), very fit minded culture.. Great motorsports Car and Cycle racing and great futbol to watch... Also Ibiza is a ferry away. I have contemplated with covid just doing my job from there for the next year! :)

I have an older friend who retired a few years back. He spends 6 months in Thailand now. He says he rents an apartment there for $900 per month and it comes with a housekeeper. Sounds like a good life for a single feller!
