When you lock the center diff, it couples the front and rear axles together so that they will be turning at the same speed no matter what. Not good for high speeds on a high friction surface.
Once the center diff is locked, the next step is locking the rear axle which means left and right rear tires are now coupled together.
Last switch locks the front tires in the same manner.
