I will be shopping for a Spectra this winter and had my heart set on a 19 like I had as a kid. The more I keep seeing 20’s for sale the more I get to thinking a bigger boat would be nice. How do they compare to the 19 for ride and performance? I have twin turbo 540 that pushes 800-1000hp depending on tune, what kind of speeds would be expected in a 20 jet?
Thanks
J

IMO, the Spectra 20 is a better all around hull, but nothing wrong with the Spectra 19.
I would go with a vdrive if your going to run the turbo motor.

I spent a few years running around Parker in a Spectra 20 Jet that my buddy still has... and that he probably wants to sell. I'd be hesitant to park any 800 - 1000hp motor package in a Spectra 20 without doing some significant structural beefing upping first. His Spectra 20 has 2 somewhat wimpy stringers and a motor box. You can really feel the hull wiggle in anything but smooth water and that's with a mild 460 Ford and maybe 50 mph. There's no way in hell I'd set foot in my buddies Spectra (as is) with 1000 hp. Or 800.

If I wanted to build a big power Spectra 20 Jet Bote I'd search out a cheap Spectra 20 V-Drive that's already got 4 full stringers... refit for the pump and make it pretty. Or find somebody selling a Jet that's already had the time consuming beefing upping performed.

Aloha

Just find a 71-74 Spectra 20 jet, it has the 4 full stringers & center bulkhead.
I have had both Spectra 20’s (jet with 500+ cubic inch & v-drive with 468 twin turbos),
V-Drive is a better setup for high HP motors

71 to 74 all had full stringers and a bulkhead, heavy glass. Stout as shit, I would look for an early hull first, but in 78-79 the jets went back to 4 full stringers, mine is a 79 and it is stiff as shit. I am running 500hp and no issues other than I want more HP. When I tear into it for real, I'll add some more glass and a bulkhead, I would not worry about running 1000 HP through it then.
