Very nice, congrats. I was next in line and going to by it if you didn’t show up on Tuesday. Let me know if you ever want to sell it. Thanks

While you are at that stage, you may want to check your fuel tank pick up tubes. I had the one in my port tank break off. Used a flexible tube and fitting since the fitting is under the gunnel. This was on my 1978 24 XS.

Did you ship it yet?

Not my motor.. just spent some time with it and the boat it was in. The owner is out out of town this week so if it hasn't shipped yet I'm sure it will as soon as he gets back! Stand up dude, no worries with him!

Any hook in the bottom? Are you changing the strut angle or anything to get some speed out of it.

solid questions.

I stumbled onto this one and am super interested.

the idea of a 24'er v-drive setup is kinda interesting to me.

I’m leaving the strut where it is but I’m building cavatation plates for it. If this boat runs 60-65 I will be more then happy with that.

My guess? With the factory bottom and stock strut location you'll need the right prop, the right gears, a light load and 650hp to hit the 60 mark.

I’m goi g to be a little more optimistic then that. This boat doesn’t have a real steep strut angle and Vdrive sits way forward in this boat. I think the engine is going to make 600 hp when I’m done with it.

Looks like it is rigged up like my 1974 24XS. If you can get an honest 60 mph out of that boat with 600 hp you'll be happy. A number of these hulls have had loads of $$$$$ thrown at them in an effort to unlock more speed. So far the general consensus is if you throw all the tricks at the bottom + rigging gear a 1000 hp engine will get you into the mid-80's on the GPS.

It won't matter if it's a 55 or 65 mph boat... it'll still be a great water dozer and it should put a big ol' smile on your face when the water gets a little rough and you can just smash right through it.

Hey there,

can you explain why the strut location is important? I can see how the angle should help push the boat forward vs up, and I can see how where the prop is located from front to rear will affect balance/wetted surface. But how does the front to back placement affect the equation?

its all tied together, but if you move the strut forward, without adjusting the angle of the propshaft you adjust the balance and handling of the boat drastically.

propshaft angle, strut location, prop location all have to be carefully thought out, and there is no magic formula that will work well on every hull. There are some guidelines that will get you into the ballpark though.

You mentioned it is rigged like your 24...what rigging differences are you aware of that other 24s have exhibited?

I am assuming you are limiting this to V-drive setups...

I have owned 2. A good buddy has owned 3. All of them have been different. Some have Casale's and some have Ace Champion V-drives. Some have Cav Plates but most don't. Some have Ford and others have Chevy motors. TH400 or Velvet drives. When we put a tape to the prop strut or V-drive no two seem to be the same. Then you get into the boats that have been modified after the original factory rigging was installed and that's when things really start to get different.

AZGeo has said in the past there was the get em' built fast and cheap "Cruiser" versions and the other 2% were setup for speed. Not sure of the real numbers but none of the factory built 24XS I have ever seen were originally setup to go fast.

Bob Teague has a ton of experience with these boats. When I was building mine, he gave me a few pointers. He’d be worth a call.

I got to talk to Bob Teague about setting an XS at Desert Storm. He drew it out on a piece of scratch paper and basically the prop needs to be 18 inches from the back of the boat(not the cav plate). He said Spectra had some kind of performance package they offered back in the day which he said all that meant was they sent the blank to his shop and he set it up. I would def give him a call.

Good info. What else is 18 inches forward of the transom? That seems like it could be right where the engine block begins.

From what he said take a square and measure from the trailing edge of the prop(farthest back point) to the transom(vertically) and from that point to the back of the transom should be 18 inches. I'll see if I have the paper somewhere still and post a picture. Among other rigging things he said as heavy as those boats were if you were really going to put power to them he would go with an 1 1/8 shaft. He's forgotten more about those hulls then most who even own them will know.

Funny story while we were standing there talking Bob asked if I knew how the company came to be named Spectra and I told him my grandpa(who owned the boat I was talking to him about) had told me years ago the owners of Spectra made all thier money in the photo business and liked fast boats so they opened a boat company. Bob about fell off the little box he was sitting on laughing and said for the most part that was true, apparently they were the leading producers of porn magazines back in the 70's.
