Seems like the tides are shifting..

Read the comments, bunch of speeds out there now and a lot of happy campers

RD

Hey uhhhhh Dave...

It seems to me that most everyone that has one is happy with it. That's great. 👍🏼

It's the people with unfulfilled deposits, are the people that are VERY unhappy these days.

That tide just keeps going further and further out...

You would never do business that way.

Can’t drive with windshield

The only thing his car isn’t doing is blowing belts. I figured out why. He doesn’t drive it hard enough because it overheats every 10 miles. lol or he has to stop and pee.

The short answer is 4 wheel will always out pace the 2 wheel.

You get yourself into a witches eye or worse the 4 wheel will almost always get you out of the funk.

My buddy has convinced his wife that their XP4 is more fun to drive in 2 wheel, because it can slide through corners....and a good driver can definitely do that...but she is not...and most the time it means that shes getting stuck a lot in technical spots....my buddy is always on his dirtbike and I am the one that is usually helping her get out of the situation with a pull or a bump....but at least the corners she takes at 10mph are more fun....lol

He does have another on order and trying to decide if he will even take delivery.

Most of the owners will not drive them hard and will have minimal issues. The ones that want to push it more will find the weak spots quickly.

How quickly the pivot joints wear and how much maintenance the axles require for a production UTV is ridiculous.

That’s also a good way to have sidewall punctures.

Honestly just curious. When i bought it the guy said always keep it in 2WD. 😂. I trust that @rivrrts429 has better info than him.

We did a ride years ago from Parker to Hualipai with Polaris engineers they said the car is designed to always be in 4wd drive on the dirt, separate gear rstios front and back and a sprag clutch in the front diff. Front wheels only deliver power when rear wheels slip beyond the gear ratio difference.

I sold our NORRA Pro R last week and its in Baja with its new owner doing some prerunning for the 1000 right now, did a quick once over after NORRA and its been good, it spit a rear axle out the diff side on him 2 days ago which is a new one for me! We did put those axles in in Baja at the last min after we cut a boot on install at the shop and didnt notice till NORRA qualiyfing so not sure what happened.

So my Pro R days have ended with:

2 cars, 5000 miles (1800 race miles), not a single belt issue ever, no problems ever with either car besides clogged aftermarket airfilter at NORRA 1000 and a brake position sensor.

Robby last week offered me a free full arrive and drive ride in a Speed car at the NORRA 1000 next year but I just cant do it haha!

Polaris Pro R is hands down the BEST off the shelf UTV on the market and the proof is in the pudding.

Now on to my new Ocotillo cruiser, Polaris Xpedition, cab with heater and AC!!

Fish why would you not take a full arrive & drive Speed for Norra? You’ve said a bunch of times you want to drive a Speed. Here’s a chance to race one on someone else’s dime. Go do it!!

Is it due to your sponsorship & relationship with Scanlon/Clark & Polaris that keeps you from driving another brand?

I’d love to hear your honest opinion? Especially over several days of driving one at a race pace.

Xpedition is a great cruiser and a nice SXS. My friend picked one up a few months ago for forest and trail riding. He took it to the dunes last weekend. I think he will end up with a second UTV for high speed stuff.

Maybe he wants to finish the race and run at race pace without worrying about breaking.

I do think he should drive one. I would certainly take a Speed car for a rip.

take the offer. Arrive, get 3 miles from the start and drive it right to someone that is still waiting. Walk back and say you got car jacked.

Any of you commuters drive past the Anaheim building recently? I saw a comment that said Speed is moving everything out of it.
I doubt it’s true, otherwise it would have been sniffed out already.

Speed is a GREAT car in my opinion, but producing at scale and trying to keep up with customers that are not a race car spec UTV owner is a losing model. The Speed guys that I know are true offroad enthusiasts and understand they are experiment cars and they love for them for that, because they run them hard and then they tinker on them as needed, just as you would any race car. It takes a special owner to have a Speed car and for the sign and drive crowd these cars are not for them.

Which Anaheim building? Miraloma Ave or Mercedes?

So they are under driven? Speed is over driven in the fronts I believe

I understand that your a hater for the sake of being a hater.. but what you are writing is misleading to say the least..
if Polaris issues a stop ride and changes a part.. is that considered a failure? Because speed said hey we got bad turbos and replaced everyone’s..

Speed said IN ADVANCE if you run the windshield you are going to have this issue.. I ran it anyways and popped a head gasket and they warranties it for me.

The axle had over 2,000 pretty hard miles on it and broke mostly due to lack of maintenance on my end (I didn’t grease it as often as I should).

I had an extra axle with the trail kit I bought so I threw it in at Glamis..

I put the Morgan oil cooler and roof scoop on it and the windshield / overheating problem is a thing of the past..

The car rips as much as that might dissatisfy you..

On top of which I have had about 30 guys drive this thing like Ricky racer to see what it’s all about and its still running like a Swiss watch..

The internet vs reality is polar opposites on this subject.

It’s definitely different.. it’s cool to see the crowds at the hot spots.. but I think it’s sketchy out in the dunes because people just come out of nowhere.

I’ll freely admit I don’t have a lot of time in big dunes.. following our group we went through some stuff I don’t think I woulda attempted on my own.. lol.

Still getting used to some of the severe off camber and transfers etc..

When we were leaving to olds with the sun directly at us and the shadows where you can’t see shit.. 😳. Then occasionally running across a smooth surface only to find out that it’s near vertical where it ends.. it is easy to see how someone can get seriously hurt out there without a lot of effort.

The car did extremely well out there though and I was happy to have real deal suspension to make up for what I lack in talent.. lol

When I goto a race I want to win. Thats why I sold my car, I do not feel it will beat a real Class 10 car at the 1000 just like we didn't at the 500 and Robby says he's not changing the rules and is leaving Class 10 with them. I do not feel a Speed UTV would survive a NORRA 1000 driving it at the pace it would take to win, none of them have even gotten close yet besides Todd Romano at the 500 and that was a much shorter race and his car looked hammered at the end with oil and such all over it in a lot of places. I would get more frustrated than anything if I had to deal with issues the whole race.

Also If I have a chance to drive a SCI car at NORRA that would be a bit better........... :)

The Xpedition is SLOW. It would suck in the dunes for sure its not a dune car. Trails and Desert its decent but you have to remember what it is. Its not to be compared to a Pro R at all.

Yep I see them going BK and restructuring to be more like Upfit UTV. More niche custom builds limited qty’s full support program.

Overall that makes more sense for them. If they can’t get someone to really run operations they will never get out of their own way.

7000 miles on my axles and no problems lol.

Just admit the car is loaded with problems (they are solvable but requires money)

A visor is your friend for those late afternoon rides into the sun in Glamis. I have a welded in visor like the race trucks and buggies have on my X3.

I recently tried out this cool like visor from DRT that sticks to the shield on a full face helmet. It helped a lot with blocking the sun. I used it in Glamis and it helped big time.

Hey Dave, when you say you added the oil cooler and the roof scoop and no more overheating is that with or without the windshield on? Cause I’m trying to get mine to the point I can use the windshield all the time.

I personally don’t compare the pro r to any of the other 1000 cc Can-Am Speed or Polaris Yamaha Kwai etc. It’s a 2000 cc engine and a four stroke non-turbo application by all means it should do better and live longer.

I have never owned a car that at some point I didn’t break an axle with the exception of the NA 1000..

Maybe you aren’t driving them hard enough?

With the windshield on doesn’t matter outside temps. The issue is they have an oil heat exchanger tied into the radiator.. water gets hot, oil gets hot, water gets hotter, oil gets hotter..

You by pass that and put a legit oil cooler in it and feed the radiator some air and it all goes away.

I do not think they will go BK. But there will be some reorganization of the company and people. They have brought some new people and tech abroad to help remedy some the problems they are having with various components. My bet is they will be the envied UTV with version 2.0. Again just a prediction…..

Speed will not give deposits back or voluntarily return everyone’s money that’s waiting. They have already said they won’t, and allegedly a few have said RG told them to lawyer up if they want out.

In the past few months Speed’s changed the website to say these are custom cars, and they are even saying it on FB @ IG. They no longer are calling these production vehicles. Problem is for 4 plus years they have said they are mass producing and making the best production UTV. And every deposit holder was told these were mass production vehicles.

IMO the best thing Speed could do is 1) return peoples money that want out. Why make your customers mad and create more bad press. Plus once one or two sue Speed and win, it’s going to be a falling house of cards. 2) Speed needs to bring in someone who knows how to run a business of this scale and let them take over the day to day and fix the bad press, fix the production issues, and bring knowledgeable people in to build the company into what we all thought it would be. Some say they can’t afford it. I’m not sure I believe that, plus as they say it takes money to create more money. Speed needs to look farther then next week or month, and start looking at years. Then TR can enjoy life living off his percentage and kite surfing around the world. RG can continue to do what he does best, and that is designing & creating the next Speed, TT or whatever he wants. He can focus on Max’s future racing career and racing SST, Dakar and NORRA & Score.

We would all like to know? We have seen this before, yet the cars get delivered and they don’t perform the same.

RG did that auto manufacture test facility 5 mile oval in Asia which at the time was 113 degrees out, high humidity, with 3 people in the car going 80 mph and never had a belt failure. Never had high water or oil temps. How does that happen?
