I'd like to stain my kitchen cabinets. They are in good condition but want a darker color. Any referals in the Santa Clarita area? And what is the going rate for an average size kitchen. I know each kitchen varies so that might be a hard question to answer but are we talking $500 or $5000?
thanks

Side job $2500-3500, company $4500-5500. Last one home owner did it himself to save. turned out nice. The prep work is key.

I heard Gel Stain is the easiest and quickest way to go now but like NicPaus mentioned above, prepping is the key. I am going to attempt to do mine myself when I can find some time.

I did see Gel is the way to go. I'm just gun shy, 50+ doors and drawers. Post up the progress when you start. Maybe that will motivate me.

Some friends of ours went right over the finish with a paint, then rubbed some stain into it. No prep at all and it won't budge.

Once you find someone. I suggest having them do 1 piece for a sample. Some price by piece some by linear ft.

Stacy and I sanded all the cabinets at the house in the keys to stain them darker.. That was A LOT MORE work then I would've ever imagined.. We actually had new doors and drawer faces put on so all we had to do was sand the flat fronts of the cabinets.. I'm pretty sure my hands are still numb from those sanders.. LOL

My wife has done ours twice. (she gets tired of the same look. I just shake my head).
We/she went from the original blonde oak look to a black stain. I thought it looked awesome but it wasn't the look she wanted. repeat the process to a light tan-ish color with some darker blends in it. Again looks awesome.

I was going to have mine re-stained but I went with paint instead and I'm glad I did. My cabinets are 40 years old and they made them look brand new. Best $2500 I ever spent.

Here's the company I used, they do some nice work. I know they're not local to you but they have quite a few before and after pictures if you want to get some ideas.

Price out new cabinets before going the route of dropping $5K for refinishing. I spent a few bucks more than the cost of refinishing the existing cabinets and as a result got new cabinets and new countertops.

I also used the Rustoleum Cabinet Transformation kit in Espresso. Love it! Its been 2 years and still look great! I had the basic oak cabinets and did all the work myself! I am a little ocd. lol. My husband helped with taking down and cleaning them but I painted etc.. I will post pics tonight.

I want to have my Havi house done, but $2500-3k seems like a lot for someone to do. Probably need someone to take a look, not a ton of cabinets. This is a good option which would take a few days probably image.jpg

the guy will be lucky to clear 1500 and a weeks worth of work at that price.

to give you some idea. precat laq or CV is about $85/ gallon the activator for cv is around $500/ gallon and will do about 90 gallons of cv. stain I $200/ gallon, $50 in sand paper, a $100+ in masking, about $100 in solvent. then you take things like my finishpro2 at $4300 my forced aired hood at $600 a truck....

Thanks for the info, I'm just looking at a much more economical way to change the look of my perfectly good cabinets. It's a somewhat small kitchen, 2nd home, I would prefer to spend that kind of $ towards a few other things like granite and tile backslash. It seems like this rustolium cabinet restoration is durable, pretty cheap, and a lot less labor with prep getting it down to my price range. Now if this was my primary kitchen I would probably go the pro route. Anyone else use this stuff, or had someone in Havasu do it for them?

Looks great, how many hours you have in it.

Thx

Thanks, I love them.. Friends/family come over and ask who did the work.. They don't believe I did it. lol Its been about 2 years now. To keep them clean, little soap and water. It took me about 2 weeks to do, after work. I am OCD so it took some time. Take your time, follow the instructions. Cost us about $300. We got a quote for staining them, it would of been about $3k. :eek I also painted our bathroom & laundry room cabinets and a couple of other small items that were oak. Good luck!

Some point you just need to get new cabinets, which requires new appliances, which requires relocations of pipes and electrical, and upgrades.

I did every thing but the Granite tops. I'll have $34k when its done. Add another $20k if a contractor did everything I did. I took 4 weeks off work to do this.
