I'm buying a standup jetski. I was all hot on a older Kawasaki 550 or 650, then I start seeing these Yamaha Super jets...

What's the deal with them? The older 1991 super jets are going for $2,000.

School me on the differences and why they seem to be more desirable please... Thanks

SJs are fun, but like to turn flat, which can be difficult for an inexperienced rider. I agree to look for a 750sx. There is a reason they replaced the 440/550 hull. Actually many reasons.

If you want to just play, do a little freestyle, the Superjet is lighter and easier to throw around. Add a ride plate, intake grate, pipe, UMI bars, finger throttle, handle pole spring, and it's a badass ski.

The Kawis feel like tanks to me but they are easier to ride long distance. If you wanted to race the Kawi 800 is probably the best choice out of the box.

Oh. And you want a round nose 701 SJ.

The 750 sxi is probably best bang for buck starter ski.

The Kawasaki 750 sx is also a great ski but will only get you to 45-48 tops if it is stock but really squirly if that's what you are looking for.

Lol. Top speed on a stand up is the last thing that I've ever considered.

He's interested in a 550. You can swim faster than those.

Get a superjet, then you can pony up to this when you are ready.

All billet 1000-1200(or bigger)

160-200 HP

These are the motors in the skis you see coming 15 feet out of the water doing backflips. Double backflips in surf...

That is a mighty nice junk of aluminum

I have a Kawi 750. Awesome ski when it is in the water, but she is friggen heavy. It's a bitch to launch unless you use a truck. I usually just use a little rolling cart, but its a bitch

She sunk last trip out. She has never sunk, but she sunk. Pulled her out, drained water out of motor and was able to fire it up, but it sounded like shit. I filled the motor up with oil. Next time I am out, I will drain oil and try to fire her back up. The bilge looks spotless now though :D

Avoid the 440/550 unless you want to be working on it more than riding it.. Look for a 750sx or any of the 701 superjets. The square nose superjet and round nose superjet are the same bottom until 08.

Yes sir, I am familiar.

I know Derrick at the Ski Clinic well.

The power to weight ratio is amazing now. So different then 15 years ago.

Yes sir, empty hull weights are in the 40lb range.

A billet motor is in the 65Lb range.

Pretty much built with all after market parts besides the starter and bendix. :)

A 550 built right runs well and can be a ton of fun. Cheap also. Buddy of mine sold his for a grand.

My son gets after it all day long on his 650.
A blast to ride, dependable and plenty fast

Back in the day, when I was into jet skis, the hot ticket was a built 550 with a 440 pump...and then the Yamaha SuperJet came out, and it was an all-around better product.

I moved on to other things, but a lot of my friends dumped their jet skis for Yamahas.

Had a Superjet and it was a lot easier to ride than my friends 750 Kawi. The bendix and froze up so I gave it to a friend who is completely redoing it. You can buy a brand new SuperJet from Parker Yamaha for $8900 OTD. River neighbor bought one a few trips back. The used ones have gone up in value lately. Lots of them on the river lately compared to 4-5 years ago. They are making a come back.

Thanks for all the feedback!
I'm actually looking for an older one with a budget of about $2000.
It's for my son who is 14 and about 100 lbs soaking wet...
It will be his first ski, and I'd like to keep it for a few years at least.
Those newer ones are nice, but out of my range for now

SORRY.... not true. I've owned COUTLESS 440's, 550's, 750's, 800's, Blasters, and pretty much every sit down ever made. Worked as a sales manager for Honda, Yamaha, and Bombardier. Raced 440's, 550's back in the day, and believe I personally kept PJS in business in their hayday.

A PROPERLY set up 440 or 550 can be a BLAST to own and ride for very very small investment. I'd Love to have a clean 91-94 550SX. ( only apx 250 pounds stock) They came with a great Reed motor OEM. With a prop, grate, mill the head, and some jetting they Rip ! and handle GREAT! STAY away from any 550 that's pre 1986 ! 86-90 are good boats but are still piston port motors, which isn't the end of the world, but the Reed motors are preferred. Had SEVERAL 86-90 550 superstocks then ran VERY well. And were bullet proof.

Stock 750's are a good CRUISER boat in stock form, but are pretty "tanky/heavy" like its 800SXR big brother. If your just starting out, They are easier to get up and cruise around, but SUCK for free riding in smooth water. The SXR's are incredible in choppy/rough water, They were designed as a RACE BOAT.... Period. But I personally hate them for a playboat. On smooth water the hull wanders or Chin walks. Spooky for most riders.

I'm a HUGE Yamaha Blaster 1 Fanboy ! (WB2's BLOW ! ) They handle like a CR250 in the water. You can drag your elbows around turns, SUPER reliable, and SUPER inexpensive fun. When its time to haul arse....drop a Kawi 1100 triple into it. Bolt in 140 RELIABLE low psi motor that will last years. Sold my last 1100B1 to a board member on here that has had all the trick custom motors. Has had several issues as a Rec boat. Those trick set ups are for the SERIOUS freestyle guys, not a Rec weekend warrior IMPO. * note B1's ARE NOT the easiest boat to re board in deep water until you learn how too * Have seen many get really upset trying to get back on.

If you find something your interested in bounce it off me...... can give you the straight scoop on what your looking at.

PS: STAY AWAY from any and all 650SX's ! They handle like junk, Are SLOW, just flat out a terrible ski in every fashion.

Good post! The 650 SX is not that bad. Stable, plenty of power and they do well in the rough. Ride plate, prop, milled head and they run.

Our family has owned and ridden stand-ups for years. Super Jets are lighter, so you can throw them around better. That being said, my son throws his SXR around pretty good. The SXR is heaver, so it's better in rough water and the tray is bigger so it's more comfortable on long rides. You can't go wrong with either. Buy a nice one, keep it nice and you will never loose money on it.

something like this would be great if everything checked out.

$1000.00 worth of fun. use it for years and get all your money back upon selling it.

I had the first year of the reed valve injection. Had not ridden it in years and the last time I moved, we ran out of room in the moving truck so I gave it to one of the movers. I wish I still had that ski!

I knew nothing, and still don't lol, when I bought a 440. Then I bought a 550. Both are stock and were pretty reliable. I'm too out of shape and inexperienced to ride them hard but I always have a good time when we take them out. I know there are way better skis out there and if it was the only water toy I had, I'd probably be upgrading. I've noticed that the prices have come up as much as $500 in the last few years for and older 550. Anything you buy used is gonna need something eventually, I'm having both motors freshened up currently and I'll have more into them than they are worth. For a kid, I think you could go to a 550 and he'd enjoy it! I'm looking for a 3rd off and on for my buddy's kid also.

Took your advice Tobtek...
Found a very clean unmolested 1993 with +145lbs of compression for $1300...
My boy loves it! One day, and we already ran 10 gallons of fuel thru it!

@Tebby. Appears to be very very clean! I'll have to look through the parts bin's here and find you some wider handle bars and pull throttle lever. Those and a good handle pole spring are must haves. Stock intake grate and prop?

Congrats. Looks like a great buy. Post some motor pics if you get time.

To expensive to start. To expensive to break, which they did. Plus they really didn't handle that great
