First time we saw it I thought we were getting invaded. Saw the first one and went hey cool a satellite then the next one, then another and another. Oh shit this is it. Lock and load.

Saw it happening in Honolulu a year or so. It was an incredible sight for sure.

I thought they were supposed to be in a geosynchronous orbit?

It was 7:33 and now the app says 5:55 tonight. It was pretty close to the time last night. It only last a couple minutes or so.

No they are low earth orbiting. They were going to be 300 ish miles up they got permission to be lower, 150-200. That’s why their dish has to track them and they need 1000’s of them for coverage. Geosynchronous like Hughes and Viasat are 23000 miles out over the equator and cover large areas. Advantage of low earth ”close” is extremely low latency.

So does that mean your internet access is intermittent? Since you have to catch a group of them as they speed by.

They were just launched they are just heading to whatever orbit their destined for. I believe there's been a couple thousand launched I think he's heading for 12,000. There's also two or three other companies that are launching also including Amazon in a year or so.

Currently in our area, Central california, we have access but they are not filled in yet so you need to be able to see a hundred degree angle so the dish can track from one satellite to the next. Eventually it will be down to 20°

The biggest problem is not enough ground stations for aa lot of areas. Signal goes from you to satellite then down to a nearby location.

to help resolve that issue they have already obtained permission for new versions of their satellites that communicate with each other supposably via laser? So through other satellites they can contact earth stations from areas that don't have any

I always miss it! Best viewing is 1 or 2 days after a launch.
