The Stokers are very weight sensitive...maybe more so than most tunnels. I agree that Al would not put a 3.2 liter on this boat. However, with careful set up, it seems that it has been done before successfully as Stoker22405 mentions ....

My buddy Wild Bill put a 3.3 short shaft Yamaha on his Stoker, with decent results.

Bottom line in the Church's opinion...make ONE mod at a time so you know what works or doesn't work.
Get a hold of the people that have done it and try and get a ride...
Al is in Florida, he is the guru of these boats...
I personally would go center steering because of balance issues, but that is how we roll...
Testing is the key to success!! Propellers make huge differences...
Set back is crucial...
Gas tank position ....
Weight load...

Good luck and post up your trials and tests!!

Here's Wild Bills Stoker w/ 3.3 Yamaha shorty.

That's why I'm center steering my baker based on what I've read on why you've center steered your boats but I know he won't want to do it on the stoker we had a 15" mid made and we're lowering the jack plate 1" lower on the transom
We're starting of with 6" of setback that's 4" of jackplate and 2" of built in set back in the new midsection what prop is wildbill running so we can use that as a starting point we're have a 30p rob hill 4 blade chopper and a 28p 4 blade bravo 1

We're running a 2150 Odyssey battery(80lb) in front of the front passenger seat to help get some weight off the transom and balance the boat when he's running buy him self

My 19' Daytona DCB was center steer...

My 21' Cougar is center steer...

My 19' Cougar is center steer...

It just made sense to go this way for weight balance AND you sit BELOW the stringers instead of on top of them for a better center of gravity...

While some have installed the 300XS on 20.4's the boat was not intended for that engine and is over what was recommended for max power. It also has a taller transom which will leave the engine too high for all around use with 15 inch engines.

Its doable.. Just takes some time to get things sorted out.. This is one of my brothers ( 4 ) stokers.... Definately a boat on the prowl when the water gets right (a tad of wind to let 'er loose) I mean , C'mon.. 1200 hp 21 ft cruisers out there and this isnt a possibility? Men like go for it.... so... GO FOR IT!

Ya we did some research and found that the shorten them to a 16" mid instead of a 15" mid so we're moving the mounting holes on the transom down 1" and the jack plate we're using dos t have any height built into it so with are measurements we should at all 2" below the pad with the jack plate all the way down and he only has 2-3 people at the most in it and is only looking for speed and not all around performance

Well, it wasn't funny when I was outlawed..!! The Nordic was also told they would be outlawed if they didn't put the SC700 engine in the boat. They came with the 1350 HP MERCURY and they got to race. How's that for respecting the rules? I was deemed "unsafe" with a thousand less HP. They hate outboards that threaten the big sponsors. I filed that under "chicken shit"...

Sounds like you have most everything under control. The bare hull on my Stoker is very close to 300 lbs lighter than the one your working on since it's one of the few light hulls that were laid up for stoker. I was told that my bare hull is 750 lbs. This means setup won't be the same on these two boats. To offset the heavy Yamaha motor (550 lbs) I have the motor mounted on a 1.5" plate. I started out with the center of the prop shaft 1.25" above the center pod. I have never changed that setting. The only props I have run are a 28 and a 32 promax. Right now the speed is limited by the 1.75 gears in the modified Yamaha gear case. Also the limiter on the Yamaha 2 strokes is 6100. It runs 90 with the 28 and 101 with the 32 but it gets there right now with both of these props. I'm looking into getting 3 to 400 more rpm. Since this boat was finished I have not had much seat time in it because of my schedule but that is going to change this season. On flat water I have to drive though a hope between 70 and 80 it then takes a nice set. I have some ideas I plan to try to get rid of the hop but getting every setup spot on is always a lot of testing that I look forward to doing.
I no that Al doesn't like these heavy motors on his boats but what choice do we have since they aren't building 400 lb motors any more. You either figure out how to make one of these work or stick with a 2.5 screamer which are getting harder to find.
Good luck with your setup and I'll be very interested in your results, and I think many other stoker owners may also be interested.

What happened with to much set back

My guess would be "unhappiness"... Kicking and bucking. Same thing can happen with too little set back on some boats. Bully had an STV with a 300xs...we thought it should come in...ironically, we went back 8 inches and up in height before the violence stopped. It would just about throw you out of the boat.

Experiment and document...refer to your copious notes!!

I'm doing the least amount I can until we figure things out then go to just a set back no jack plate

If I were doing this setup I think I would start out with a 3" manual slide master manual plate. Your going to need some up and down adjustment to get it dialed in. My boat is light and I'm 175 lbs. plus my motor is about 50 lbs heavier than the Merc. on this 20.4 Stoker so the 1.5 plate I used worked very well. Even better you should find a Stoker with a 300 XS and find out what setback there running. With all that upholstery you may actually end up with 4 to 6" of setback. Just my opinion and I'm no expert.

Well we got the boat finished and out at the tunnel and friends regatta it was a good trip till the hydraulic steering line burst causing the boat to spin out at about 65mph throwing me from the boat lucky to walk away with just a sore back
Has anyone had this happen and everyone should check the integrity of your hydraulic lines IMG_1778.jpg IMG_1787.jpg IMG_1789.jpg
