I have a 3/8 x 16 thread that is stripped. Should I use a heli-coil or drill out and tap up a size? I would rather helicoil but never installed one, do you have to rent or purchase a tool to insert it? I watched a video yesterday and it looks like you need a tool to spin it in and seat it.

If I tap up can I go to 7/16 or does it need to be 1/2"

Heli-coil, when you buy the kit it comes with the tap and inserting tool. They have them on Amazon, & McMaster. probably around $30-$40

The insert tool is just a plastic shaft that pulls the coil in from the bottom. It is the cheapest part of the whole kit, the tap is where the money is.

Cool, that's what I was hoping to hear bc I didn't like the idea of one bolt in a series being a different size. Thanks Racey!

Yea, I may go to Copper State Nut and Bolt and pick up the kit.

How's the build going, when are you moving?

We break ground at the end of the month,
I'll be out there this weekend to move some Barrel cacti.
Build should take about 4 months.

Depending on the application, you might consider Keenserts as an option.

Copper state will have what you need. They also have everything you may ever need, and everything you will never need.

I know there is one in Phoenix, not sure about Tucson.

No, we only have Fastenal and Copper State and Grainger. I prefer Copper State, guys at the counter are cool and I think they're a home grown AZ business.
I get to Phoenix occasionally on business so I'll check out McD next time I'm in town. [emoji106]

If you already have a 1/2-13 tap and a .453 diameter drill. PM me your address and I will throw a keensert in the mail. I buy these by the 1000's

RDP never ceases to amaze me of the knowledge base here. [emoji106]
Thanks for the link and video Wheeler!

If I lived there already, I'd help.
I've installed thousands of them.
I Likely have the drills and taps as well.

Thanks for the offer, I don't want to trouble anyone for it. [emoji106]
Are the Keenserts thicker, the reason for the .453 drill and 1/2x13 tap?

yes, the keenserts are threaded on the outside as well, but you drill a bigger hole than you would for a normal 1/2-13 thread

You beat me to it Wheeler. These are WAY better. They come in thin and thick versions. They are a permanent repair.

Heli-coils are actually pretty damn good, in aluminum a helicoil thread is stronger than the original tapped thread because the helicoil wire is made from a hard stainless alloy, and the surface engagement is greater into the original part. I have never had a helicoil fail if done properly. On deep holes you can stack up a couple helicoils also.

I went outside and rounded up some of the most popular inserts customers use.
All are 3/8-16 from left to right.

Helicoil
Pros .. Easy to buy, small outside diameter.
Cons.. unscrew easily, special install tools and taps required, weakest of the inserts.

Timesert
Pros.. same outside diameter as helicoil, way better than helicoil.
Cons..special install tools and taps required.

northwestern
Pros.. standard drill / tap tooling, better pullout resistance than helicoil,
Cons.. unscrew resistance is dependent upon locking compound.

EZ lok
Pros.. standard drill / tap tooling, better pullout resistance than helicoil,
Cons.. unscrew resistance is dependent upon locking compound.

Taplock
Pros.. no tap required, best pullout strength of all inserts shown.
Cons.. hard to install without machine, unscrew resistance is not as good as keylocking.

Keenserts (3) light, heavy, extra heavy. Same 3/8-16 internal with 3 steps of external size
Pros.. standard drill / tap tooling, 2nd best pullout resistance, best resistance to unscrewing
Cons.. minimal

This is an accurate breakdown.

I've never had any luck using Helicoil products at all. [emoji107]

I like the Timesert product line the best. [emoji106]

Everything? How about a 1/2 12 left hand thread? :hmm
I'd have to check. But, I know we have every thread size you would find on an engine. We have every spark plug repair kit as well.
