How many times during the summer do you get that done? I usually had to do my yellow lab three times, not so much to keep him cool but he would never dry out even in the heat of summer. Difficult to keep him out of the pool.😊

RIP my sweet boy

Our Australian Shepherd Kiwi is headed to the groomer next week and it can’t come soon enough 😆
I think it’s @DaytonaBabe that has an Aussie so I’m sure she and other Aussie owners feel our pain when it comes to the hair!!

You are correct. We have an aussie with a VERY full show coat. Not sure if shaving is your intention, but, I'd advise against shaving an aussie for summer. They are a double-coated dog, and, believe it or not, the coat actually helps to insulate them from the heat. I go pretty heavy handed on the undercoat rake to get all of the shedding undercoat out (and get enough to make sweaters for a family of 27 😳) , and she does just fine in the Arizona heat. You may already know this, so if you do, my apologies. If not, look up some info about double-coated dogs. Happy to share any other info about the rake I use, etc

Appreciate the info and no way we’re shaving her! She just gets a trim of her butt and legs for the most part….just thins her out a bit. I just laugh every time she rolls over because she looks like a fluff ball!

Would love to hear what you use for the undercoat. So far the best we’ve found is what I think is called the ferminator. Works good but always open to new ideas. I brush her in the front yard a few times a week after work…my stress reliever from 3 crazy kids and the birds love the fur balls I leave on the grass.

Oh my goodness, she is so beautiful! I use the undercoat rake linked below. You will be absolutely shocked how much fur comes off using the rake. So relieved you aren't going to shave her, btw. Whew!!

Amazon Link: MIU COLOR Pet Grooming Brush, 2 Sided Undercoat Rake for Dogs & Cats, Professional Deshedding Brush and Dematting Tool, Effective Removing Knots, Mats, Tangles for Cats, Dogs, Extra Wide https://a.co/9l1o4xd

Pic of when I first started using the undercoat rake... 😆

Fur you say. Here's my 83 lb. Pure Bred Aussie. Next to him is an average sized female Border Collie. We typically combed his undercoat, but we did shave him a few summers, he seemed fine with it. It was handier when we'd be at the houseboat, as when he waded in the water, he didn't come out like a mop, dripping excessively.
Old age got both of them four years ago. As mentioned above, thought about getting a Minil, my buddy has a great one. I've been told to be careful, as sometimes they take on the personality of the "small breed" they are mixed with, I don't want a Mini Aussie that yaps like a Pomeranian, etc.
