Stay away from any year 6.0 diesel!!
There is no good years and anyone of them will be a gamble.Be prepared for towing and expensive repairs.
EGR coolers,Oil coolers,Injectors,Head gaskets due to weak/stretched head bolts,EGR valves,IPR's,FICM's,High pressure oil pump, rear main seals, block plate leaks rear of the engine. The list goes on i have seen alot of them that have many miles and relatively low problems but i have seen 10x as many that have been nightmares. If you are set on a 6.0 & If you are buying from from a dealer get the best extended warranty you can get.
Becareful with the v-10 also. There are problems with some of those also. Im not sure what years or exactly what to watch out for. Im sure others will chime in....
Why haven't they designed a new egr cooler? Everything I read points the cooler doing damage to everything else.
Anyhow, mine broke again last week under warranty. Ford offered me a free extended warranty. So they can keep fixing it for three more years.

Bullet Proof Diesel in Arizona makes a very good aftermarket egr cooler and oil cooler kit. It will probably void your warranty though.

Towed in on flat bed again this afternoon. Exact same problem as last three times, no power and smokes until it quits competely. Scared to talk to Ford in am. Always 3-4k. About ready to fight them this time, to stubborn to trade. :grumble:
A "sneaky pipe" and ARP head studs do the trick, try to do it before you blow an EGR or oil cooler.
Where I work we have 3 - 6.0 diesels, and all I can say is crap, crap, crap! They have all been in the shop numerous times and man is it expensive. Our gasoline trucks are just fine. Good luck with your search.
