Ya know I'm not one to abuse my moderating power... LOL

But that god damn plane will take off, with the same airspeed and double the wheel (ground) speed.

Anyone that opposes that will be BANNED! :D

For those of you who are new to this (don't think their are any but what the hell :D) here is the original question:

A plane is standing on a runway that can move (like a giant conveyor
belt). This conveyor has a control system that tracks the plane's
speed and tunes the speed of the conveyor to be exactly the same (but
in the opposite direction).

Will the plane be able to take off?

Yes it will be. The conveyor tracks the speed of the plane and adjusts its speed to match the speed of the plane, but in the opposite direction. In order for this to happen, the plane must be moving forward at a certain speed for the treadmill to have a speed to track.

Let's say the plane's takeoff speed (Vr) is 100 mph. If the plane were moving at 100 mph, the treadmill will also move at 100 mph in the opposite direction. The plane will still move at 100 mph...however the wheels will be spinning at twice the speed at 200 mph. And because the plane's speed = Vr, it will take off.

This is going to be a pretty boring thread unless we get some non-believers...maybe all the idiots are still hitting refresh at Hot Boat.

If the plane were facing into the wind, and the wind speed was 100mph, then the plane would take off ,with no ground speed and no treadmill speed. So there! :D
