I stopped at the local machine shop this evening to pick up some paper work. The shop was owned by Don for 50 years and retired last year selling to a group that owns multiple other shops in the mid-west. I met Mike the shop manager when searching for a shop prior or plant going commercial. Turns out he and I were in the Navy during the 80’s stationed at 32nd street San Diego. He a machinist on his boat and me working with gas turbines on mine.
They have 6 large horizontal and 1 vertical lathe. I asked which was the oldest and followed Mike to a 1942 American Tool Works lathe made in Cincinnati OH. Started out with the Army turning out 90mm tank barrels for WWII. The Navy bought it in 1954 and it sat in storage up in Reno until 2009 when Don bought it. It’s old hat to most of you guys but very cool to us non machinists. Just a couple of pics.
