This afternoon I was driving on the freeway towards home...

...heading north on a six lane segment of US 75 out of downtown Dallas, running about 85 MPH in the left lane. Suddenly the car screamed, began vibrating like crazy, and lost almost all of its forward momentum. The unmistakable sound of a connecting rod punched through the block along with lots of blue smoke signaled my 185K miles super dependable daily driver '99 Camry had done blowed up.

I cut across the traffic lanes and made the next exit. It ran long enough for me to park it in a pay lot. I called my buddy John to come get me, then I called a We Buy Cars Running or Not. John and I emptied the car of my junk, the rollback showed up a few minutes later, and I accepted $325 for my dead steed.

That car was killer. I drove it hard. Last year I made the trip from Plano to Albuquerque averaging 79 MPH and 23 MPG. It ran 105 MPH for hours effortlessly, and had the coldest A/C of any car I've owned. It never failed me until today.

I've been looking for a 2 or 3 year old F-150 or Silverado the last few weeks. I guess it's time to spend upwards of $40K for one now. I still have my 4WD V-10 Excursion, but 11 MPG ain't very attractive.

Note the blood on the ground:

I've been driving the Camry for ten years, and instead of buying new Suburbans or pickups, I've been putting the $1,200 per month the payment and insurance would have cost in the bank. Now I have $144,325.00. I just had to put up with my friends laughing at me for driving a twenty year old car.

The $325 was the cash I got for the Camry.

Spill it, why do you think it grenaded?

And no luck on improving the Excursion gas mileage? Or you didn't go down that road?

I drive 185 miles one way to the station once a week, I needed something I could beat hard and not care about...

$2400 later I got myself a 2009 crown vic flex fuel with 97k miles on the clock. These cars make great beaters and are getting 19-21 mpg highway

I did end up putting a super low mileage set of used wheels and tires on it though

Some of those Yota's had the sludge issue motors that would send them to an early grave.

My dad has one with well over 200k. Still runs like a top. He's retired and I'm trying to get it from him so I can use it as a commuter

That is a great saving strategy. Doing the same thing right now with the intention of my next new car purchase in 2024.

That's my next project.

Dunno why it blew. I had an OBD scanner in the car, plugged it in and the codes said "Misfire cyl 1, misfire cyl 2, misfire cyl 3, misfire cyl 4."

No kidding.

😂

It did that after 185K? Not sure I'd consider that a huge success story?
Yeah, I'm disappointed. I thought the car was easily good for another 50K miles or more. I've been driving it just 6,000 miles per year for the last five or so. The engine internals were really clean. When I changed the oil, the waste oil was clean and clear. It looked almost the same as the new oil out of the bottle.

Years ago my wife had a Dodge Charger 3.5L that we bought brand new....she used that to commute for years and put about 267k miles trouble free miles on it...it still looked and performed like new when we traded it in....so I am a little surprised that the Camry only went 185k

Driving my Toyota today 267,500 miles. It's pretty much worthless now that some POS stole the cats. Had a main seal $300 , tires and brakes . Funny how people judge compared to Driving my other trucks.

Seems like it should have been good for at least that many more miles.

My mom has a '99 Avalon that is approaching 300K and still runs great. She doesn't run it easy either. My dad wants to junk it, but she won't let him. We call it the crumpled up beer can because it's had so many body repairs done from getting hit in parking lots and other incidents.

Luck of the draw, I guess...

I had to replace the oil pump a few years ago. That 2.2L engine had some kind of issue that made the pump seals go out. It was leaking oil like crazy when they went bad.

That mileage seems low for a failure.

Oil pump shaft seal, oil pump o-ring, idlers, tensioner, cam seal and crank seal were always replaced with the timing belt at 60 or 90K (Toyota changed the recommended service interval somewhere around 2000-2001 IIRC). Never saw an oiling issue with the 5SFE.
