God Bless, God Speed, May you Rest In Peace and watch over your fellow brothers and sisters.
A Cal Fire firefighter died Thursday while battling the Thomas in Ventura County.
Cory Iverson, an engineer with Cal Fire/San Diego County Fire Authority, died Thursday while working the wildfire, according to 10News.com.
The cause of Iverson's death has not been announced, but a Cal fire official told the Los Angeles Daily News that a firefighter called a “mayday” during a “serious accident” early Thursday.
According to KTLA, Iverson was part of a crew working a fire line near Fillmore when he was killed.
Later in the afternoon, a procession of several fire apparatus escorted a hearse that carried Iverson's body from the scene to coroner's office in Ventura. Helicopter footage from KTLA showed firefighters on a number of overpasses saluting as the procession passed.
"Please join me in keeping our fallen firefighter and his loved ones in your prayers all the responders on the front lines in your thoughts as they continue to work under extremely challenging conditions,” Cal Fire Chief Ken Pimlott said in a statement.
The Thomas Fire broke out 11 days ago and has consumed 379 square miles throughout Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, according to Fox5SanDiego.com. The fourth largest fire in the state's history, it has destroyed 972 structures.
Iverson is the second death reported during this fire. A 70-year-old woman died in a vehicle crash on the first day of the fire.
