NO!!!!!!!!!!!

No movement (plane) = No lift

But what if there was a big giant fan in front of it instead? Could it get lift and not go anywhere

Need air to flow under the wings to get it to take of. As its standing still in one place that wont happen. No flow no go[emoji12]

If it's just sitting on the belt the wheels are not moving. Just because it's designed to move at the same speed of the wheels...

Is it full of passengers?

Is it going to Australia or is it going to London?

747s are getting old...

With sufficient airflow over the wings, yes. That's why airplanes always take-off into the wind...even though a tailwind makes it easier to ride your bike fast.

Intuitively the answer would be no. However the airplane is propelled by the jet engines, not the wheels, so the wheels speed is irrelevant to the actual motion of the plane.
And there you have it.

Not quite, you didn't factor in the speed rating of the wheels. If the ground is moving at X and the plane needs to be moving at Y to take off then the wheels would be turning faster then normal and possibly destroying the wheels:D

Negative ghost rider.

Airflow across the wing of a 747 has little to do with flight other than directional.
Take off and maintaining flight is from thrust of the engine.

You'll never hear of a 747 losing engines and gliding. They glide like a bus would. ;)

Who said the plane isn't moving?

Engines running at take off power it would be like a catapult on an aircraft carrier.... Maybe.

I watch air disasters more than I should. Seems like the amount of dumbass pilots is very very high.

They rely on AP for everything. No actual flying skills.

So what you say is that if it lost its engines mid air it would drop like a stone? If so, you would get a bus to fly in theory, if you could just find a way to mount the jets?

In the example it is not. Belt goes one way, plane in another at the same speed, makes it stand still?

No, in the example it said the treadmill would turn as fast as the wheels.
.
FYI...this subject has been debated on multiple forums for a decade...do a search. :D

Tries a different prop when they have a problem ............ HA HA

(hint hint) If the same plane had pontoons on it, would it be able to "take off and fly away from a moving river" ?

mythbusters already proved the plane would take off, with a real plane.

LOL
The example NEVER says whether Anything is actually moving or not. It does say that IF the Planes Wheels move the Conveyor WILL move the same speed in the opposite direction.
The real question is how is the planes propulsion connected to the planes wheels?:smackhead:bash:

Why this is even still being debated is beyond me...we literally have pilots and guys who make airplanes, spaceships and parts for them on this very site LOL

I still can't believe that people struggle with the logic as to why it would take off and actually argue about it.
