My buddy Kelly, who is not a member on here but is known by some of you through our trips running this boat all over, owns this blue 42' Cigarette Tiger "Mind If I Smoke". This boat was commissioned in 2000 with #6 drives hooked to Richie Zul 1,000HP blower motors and was originally built for Lorenzo Fertitta who founded and later sold the UFC organization. Fertitta has been an avid powerboater for many, many years and has owned some ICONIC Cigarette's including the 42' Cigarette "Mind If I Smoke", the 46' Cigarette "Helios", the recently commissioned 42X Cigarette "Drogon" as well as Skaters, Nor-Techs and other high peformance boats. He also owns the super yachts "Lonian" and support yacht "Hodor". "Mind If I spoke was delivered to Dick Simon Marine in 2000, as Fertitta was living in Vegas at at the time. He ran it all over So. call, Florida, Mexico and over seas. "Mind If I Smoke" is also the famed boat @RiverDave was stepping off of in LOTO when he broke his ankle and is also the boat that Kelly found nearly 10k in cash stuffed away in a remote part of the boat.

Anyway, came across this photo from probably 2001 I hadn't seen in a few years but I always dug it. Shows both "Mind If I Smoke" and "Helios", Fertitta's previous yacht, running down the coast. It's just a bitchen shot, thought I'd share the photo and the history behind it.

It's the ones right up ahead of him that I'm thinking he caught some huge air on.

Was there another 42' that they kept at Dick Simon in the early 2000's? I towed one of their Cig's from the AZ / NM border when Gerard's truck broke down brining it back to Dick Simon from Miami. We ended up losing a wheel bearing and towed it most of the way on two wheels on one side. I thought it was a 42' (white / yellow / black) but it's been a while.

Hmmm, it's been a while. It was an interesting trip to say the least. Took us 24 hours to get it back to DSM on two wheels.

I keep waiting for him to stop teasing me with that Cig tied down up there.... let that baby run finally! All he's done so far is fly the chopper.

Kenny's boat was bad ass! Got to go out on it a couple times.

Dick Simon was always a super nice guy. Even though I only bought a cheap Baja from him he always treated me like any other customer. Every time we were at Dana we'd stop by and see him and his wife. Last I saw him was several years ago and they were living on their boat in the harbor but I think they bought another house. Have you talked to him lately?

@PlanB maybe the Crayola 42 🤷🏼

It might have been that boat I was thinking of. I towed one down to San Diego from Dick Simon that I was confusing with the Fertitta boat that I towed from the desert.

There was a big power straight bottom Gun with #6's that was named "Come Fly With Me" that was parked with the Fertitta's boats at DSM. I thought the Fertitta's owned that boat as well, but after almost 20 years my memory is a little hazy. Do you remember that boat @Tank ?

OK. So, yes, Dave (@CanyonLakeDave ) Is probably right. The Crayola boat that was owned for a while by the heir to Wrigley Gum, Catalina Island, Wrigley Field etc. It was a '99 #6 Tiger powered by 900SC Mercs. I'd run it a couple times when Justin Silvers owned it. Great boat (as are all the #6 Tigers). It's now back midwest somewhere. Another great running Tiger. Kind've cool that at the far bow of the cabin where the bed usually is there was a door and behind that was a full head. Cigarette only did a couple of Tigers like this but it was kind've a cool feature. Could have been that Tiger you moved around for sure Chris (@PlanB )

cigarette-42-tiger-121864.jpg

Al (@ChiliPepperGarage ) Kenny Boyces American Flag #6 Merc 900SC Tiger was always one of my favorites. Spent al lot of time running that thing with Kenny. He sold it to a gentlman in Japan probably 12 years ago and it's never been seen again. I've always told myself if that thing ever pops up on the market again I would do whatever it took to buy it. And no, I haven't seen Dick Simon since Scott Conrad bought the business. I hope they're doing well, as you said, they were always super nice people.

KBTIger.jpg

Greg (@steamin rice ) Helios was / is probably the most beautifully painted Cig in existence! The paint on that 46 is just unreal. Remember when it was at the SCOPE party. Drool marks all over it. And yes Conner (@Apex svt ) there was that video of those dipshits running it like a jet ski through some backwater swamp in Texas or Louisianan that was unreal. They hit a tree stump and did some damage to the prop, drives and hull. The video has since been taken down from Youtube and the boats whereabouts are unknown. Most likely in some warehouse in Texas.

Chris, I remember "Come Fly With Me" VERY well. '99 #6 straight hull Top Gun powered by Zul 1,000SC's. Thing was wicked. It wound up in a wood chipper part of an insurance scam. Shame too. Such an awesome boat.

It was definitely the Crayola boat I was thinking of. I remembered the yellow and black.

That's too bad to hear about Come Fly With Me. That was a very nice boat! Sean would take that boat out of Dana Point once in a while to run some fuel through it.

My buddy and I worked down at the old Dick Simon Marine when Conrad bought it and had Gary Teague (GT Performance) run the service shop for a couple years. We spent the summer launching boats, changing oil/drive oil, moving boats around, etc. This would have been probably '05ish.

At that time, there were still some Cigarette's in the storage lot. I specifically remember a silver, blue and red 31' Bullet with 500efis. I always thought it was a totally cool boat. I only remember two 38's. I want to say one was called Out of Control. I remember it had some orange and a small clear wind deflector. The other was the full race boat with standup bolsters and no cabin interior. There were definitely the two 42's with 6's that were always parked at the front of the lot (the blue one that this thread is about and a white one that looked like a kid with Crayola crayons went wild on it).

There was a bunch of cool stuff floating around there. Wetterau's Skater and Freightliner were in a covered spot, there were a bunch of Fountains (I remember a 51' with shafts,), a couple of Hustler's and a 40 foot Formula Cruiser with 500efis that was a monster on the trailer and a pain in the ass to launch with the shop's F-250. It was a fun college job for a summer... test drives were the best.

They also had the Gladiator with staggered 500 EFI's that was in the covered spot next to mark's Skater. I tried to trade my Top Gun for that boat but could not get the price I wanted. I was up there a lot from 01-05. Lot's of cool boats...

You sure it was staggered? Cheng kept his Gladiator down there a lot and there was another SCOPE dude that had the blue and white gladiator for a couple seasons. And Joe Baca's was running around but that would've been 2010 ish. Cheng had those crate chevy motor 572's he ran in the glad for a while. Always a problem keeping them cooled. Blue glad had 525's.

Kevin Schulte owned the 38 Gun "out of control" but he didn't store it at DSM. Maybe in and out of there a few times though. Bad ass mo fo though. Rumured to be the fastest naturally asperated Top Gun ever built. Has Richie Zul tunnel rammed 750's in it.

1.png

The F2 Boat (Race set up Top Gun) was either "Speed Racer" which Jeff Cheng also owned in the early 2000's. Dick Simon and Sean Stinson rolled it in a race in Benicia in 2000 or 2001. Boat went back to cigarette was completely stripped to the stringers and rebuilt. Cheng bought it and had it shipped back from Miami.

The other F2 boat that would've been around in 2005ish was Gary Sanchez' F2 Cigarette which won the world championship with Phil Lipshutz driving.

Both boats (actually Out of Control as well) are in LOTO area.

^^^ It might have been that blue Gladiator. It was definitely a staggered setup and the paint was identical to the above boat. Could have been 525's instead of 500's. It was a brand new boat at the time and it was not selling. This would have been about 04 or so.

While I'm bringing up Kenny's Tiger, there's two great stories I always remember.
1) we went out for a run in Havasu with a boat load of people and running south towards steam boat cruisen 70. Dude in some 30ish vee bottom or it may have been a cat, I don't recall exactly but I look over and they're pulling past us waving and smiling. I look over at kenny and he smiles and keeps on trucking. Little further down he starts chasin the other boat down. we went past them at around 100 looked over smiled and waved. They didn't wave back. LOL

Other time was when this pic was snapped. That's my fat ass on the bow. We ran over to Catalina for lunch. stayed a bit too long and the catalina wind picked up. It got snotty out with wind chop and a good 5' swell that was stacked pretty deep. We ran back with another scope guy in a Hustler that had 6's and big power. Tiger was walking away from the Hustler. Were gettin' busy going back to Huntington Harbor. Get back, get the boats on the trailer, notice water leaking out of the center of the Hustler! Fuck hull cracked along the inside strake. Crazy. He got it fixed, sold it and bought a Top Gun 😁

I had the opportunity to work on one of Dick's Indy 500 entries in the early 90s. He is a gentleman and a throwback to the times when character actually meant something.

Dick is a great guy. Scott Conrad, who bought DSM from Dick, is one of the nicest guys in the boating business as well. He currently owns a business in Florida and DSM is now Sun Country.

Great stuff in this thread. I remember going from Newport to Avalon in a scope run with Gary Sanchez when he had the F2 boat. He ran that boat fast and I still remember the hang time in that boat when hitting some rollers. It seemed like we were in the air more than in the water. Air Gair!

Last time I saw Gary was in 05 at Scott Conrad's grand opening of his place in HB. Gary was getting out of boating and into cars. I think he was driving a GT3 that day. That seemed to be the beginning of the end of SCOPE with a lot of the main guys getting out of boating, at least performance boating.

That sounds about right. Gary sold the F2 boat and then started getting into cars instead. Jeffrey is now big into exotics and has a crazy collection. I haven't seen either of those guys for years but stay in touch through social media.

I think you are right about that starting the wind down of scope. The main guys who started it were getting out of performance boating, and there wasn't another group of boaters to keep the momentum going. That combined with the housing crash in 2008 or so made it tough.

I agree. We sold our gun that year and bought our 28' Skater (actually took delivery at Scott's grand opening that day I last saw Gary) and went back to only boating on Havasu. I miss ocean boating...

I talked to Gary a couple months back. Just called to check in on him. He and Evonne are doing well. Talk to Kenny Boyce and cheng every few months or so too. Ran into Lu lyall Chris Prouty @CanyonLakeDave Dave anderson and some other scope guys at dessert storm this year. Blast from the past. They’re all pontoon boaters now, like you!! 😁😁😁

Haha, that's funny. Nort is about the only one I keep up with. He has a wake boat and his big Sunseeker.

Are you sure the silver, blue and red was a Bullet? This one was down there for a while and I was trying to work a deal on it. It's been so long now I don't remember for sure but it was either a Vice or a Mystique. They told me some casino owner from Vegas owned it and never ran it. It had been sitting there for a while and they finally called the owner to ask him what he planned to do with his Cigarette. He replied, "What Cigarette?"! The guy forgot that he bought it! They thought after that he might sell it cheap but was still too much $ for me at the time. Wish I could have swung it as I would still own it if I did.

Kevin's Out Of Control. Definitely a bad ass boat. Got to wheel it a few times. Long time ago Kevin had donated a Santa Barbara run as a raffle prize for some charity. Right before the scheduled run his dog bit his right hand so he couldn't drive the boat and he asked me to drive it up to SB from Chanel Islands. It was pretty snotty out that day and Kevin is pretty particular about his boats so I was being extra careful. He wanted to give the raffle winner a good run though so he kept after me to hammer it a bit harder. I obliged and we had a great time with lunch at Brophie's.

Kevin decided he was okay to drive back so he took over. After running back south a bit one of the Bravo's bit the dust and we had to limp back to SB on one engine. So glad it didn't happen when I was on the sticks!

Scott Conrad on one of our SB runs. He was running this cat. Don't remember what it was, maybe a Spectre? @Tank, were you on that run? Do you know what it was?

Loved Kevin's gun. So many good times running that thing. It's currently for sale but far from the condition it was in when he or Jeff Sukay owned it. You could eat off those 750 Zuls when they owned it.

The 30 was Fertitta's as well. His father owned casinos in vegas.

As Chris pointed out. That was Conrand's 40 Skater he ran with us that day. That boat was later purchased by @Duramax

I remember the silver, blue and red boat at DSM, I want to say that it was a Mystique, and 2004-5 sounds about right. I was in the process of making a deal with Shockwave on my new 34 and was looking at other options just in case. The mystique was too small for me but I thought it was a great looking boat. I tried to make a deal on a couple of 35' cigarettes but was too far apart on $$ to make it work at the time.

Some cool boats in this thread! I remember Marks 46 "Double Take" sitting next to my 40 and thinking how gigantic it was!
