Hey Guys,
My brother, Dad and I are finishing up some of the final details for our 26 Howard Cat build and we had some questions about timing.

We purchased this kit from Jegs: https://www.jegs.com/i/MSD-Ignition/121/6564K1/10002/-1

It has mechanical advance and the box also has provisions for 10 or 20 degree start retard. It comes from the factory with the heaviest springs (all in at 4,000 RPMs) and the Blue advance stop bushing (21 deg advance). The motor is a carbureted 540 and the dyno sheet attached was when it had a collapsed intake lifter (didn't realize until we checked everything after this pull) so I'm guessing we have a little more hp and tq. How do you guys suggest we configure this setup? Thanks in advance for the suggestions!

I had a similar situation but with an MSD HEI Distributor. after reading countless threads on the subject i determined that most common thing was to run the smallest springs to get the timing all in around 2000 rpm. worked for my engine which was an NA 555.

Yes, you want it all in (34 degrees max) as soon as possible. Lightest springs... or just lock it at 34 and be done.

Lightest springs with the biggest bushing

Bigger bushing less curve so brings ur intial timing high up at idle

Set ur timing at 34*@3000 rpm

ALWAYS!!! Rev past 3k and make sure curve doesnt keep going!!!!!!!

The idle timing! It is what it is?? But should be Around 20*
