We saw it last night. Loved it. We also appreciated Cruise's monologue before the movie started. I don't think they could have done a better job. They kept much of the storyline true to the original. Miles Teller was a superb cast for Goose's son. Penny Benjamin (the admiral's daughter mentioned in the original) is in this one. I didn't have high expectations so it certainly exceeded them. The flight choreography (is that the correct term??) was absolutely amazing! I don't know if it was CG or not and don't really care. This is the first movie we've seen since Covid began and we used to go a lot.

One thing to add. This is opening weekend, right? We're in Durango and I purchased the tickets around noon for 6 PM and got decent seats. At the theater, there was zero line to get in. There were 2 people in front of us at the concessions. We still had the reserved recliner seating. Such a great experience watching it in a small town. In Reno, or anywhere in SoCal, it would have been a complete zoo. Parking, getting in, purchasing snacks. It would have taken an additional 30 minutes. I'm never moving back to a big city again. The quality of life there sux balls. Oh, and we parked literally right in front of the theater doors.
This thread is about a movie. Not about how much you don’t like California. I liked the movie for the record.

These hate California post are getting old. Especially in a thread that has nothing to do with California.

I thought it was a great movie. The casting was great, the story line was dang good, and the plane shots were amazing. I’ll watch it again.

I saw it yesterday at the Regal in the Irvine spectrum. My chick was nice enough to get tickets for us in the theatre where the seats move with the movie. Thats the first time I've ever experienced the moving seats. These seats even had water and air sprayers! I thought it made the movie incredible. One of the best sequels of all time and Jennifer Connelly is still banging!

Anyone else not interested in supporting that industry?

Not trying to throw shade on people's excitement over the movie but I'm not interested in supporting libtard acting industry with my money. My wife has been hinting about the movie and i'm indifferent...
I'm on the same page, been 20+ years since I went to the theater and I doubt I'll ever go back. Especially for a movie with little Tommy it LOL.

You would be surprised on how many conservatives are in our industry. I’m one of them. Majority of the crews behind the Camera on set are as well. So your money does support some good people.
Post production is a complete different story, They make the movie make sense and put it all together. All so Producers, directors, actors are from all walks of life . How many late night talk comedy shows are there . Are they conservative ones ?

Loved the movie, couple of things I noticed that struck me.
I thought TopGun moved to Fallon, Nevada. I was curious how they would represent that two-horse town. Guess movie magic put it in Miramar. No biggie, it's sexier than Fallon.
The movie is set in California, with No helmets when riding the Motorcycles. Not the end of the world, but still.

I think they pulled in details from the previous movie well. The soundtrack was awesome, I appreciated the monologue at the beginning.

I really enjoyed it. I thought they did a good job of bringing the original movie into the new one. Lots of references to the original. The flight scenes were fantastic. It was refreshing to not see a Woke agenda for once.

If you were a fan of the original I'd recommend you go see it in the theater.

Saw it this afternoon at Red Rock casino. Us military guys will be a bit more critical of the authenticity of it. It was decent. I'm glad Kilmer was in it. The movie magic was more apparent in the flight scenes. Storyline was good. There were a couple campy moments. It was odd to me that there were 2 flag officers Vice Admiral Simpson (Jon Hamm) and Rear Admiral Bates running the show mostly from start to finish. Even on the Carrier at the end mission, 2 Admirals on the boat is awful crowded brass. Commander Carrier Groups are usually Rear Admiral Lower Half (1 star) running the whole show even on special missions. Of course the Carrier Group Commander answers to higher brass but usually not in person. Civilians won't have a problem with that. I don't go to theaters much but it was a nice change and I saw the 2D IMAX version that had bitching sound.

I was pleasantly surprised, thought they did a good job. Like him or not, Tom Cruise is one of the last real movie stars. They showed about 10 previews and every one was some fantasy crap. They did a good job staying inline with the original. Fortunately Jerry Bruckheimer was in charge of the this and the original.

The North Island base was a good choice for the movie, beaches and all. The sailing scenes were right off Pt Loma…

Thought the ending was a little hokey but that’s Hollywood. All things considered, a great flick.

Just saw it on havasu. Ab-so-lutely fan-fuckin-tastic. I went in with an open mind not expecting too much. Just to be entertained. And I was! Took the family. We all talked about how great it was on the way home.

Let me break it down in terms I think everyone can relate too -

In this fucked up day and age it was some classic Hollywood Americana feel good entertainment. The way movies used to be.

GREAT FLICK!

It’s my understanding cruise pushed hard to make this thing. Respect making it happen.

Oh, and best part of the night I’m walking out to the parking lot and hold the door for an old timer that’s limping a bit. He struck me as a vet. He thanks me I say, “you watch top gun?” He says immediately, deadpan and with out hesitation “great fuckin movie!” Lol. I go “I know right?! So awesome!! “ lol

Fuck yes it was awesome. Straight called out Iran as well as the only country that has and still operates f-14s.

Also called out the Syrians since that was the last U.S. aerial kill when a superbug killed a su-22 with 2 missiles as the first was a pK dud

Not a Tom Cruise fan multiple reasons but I do like 2 of his flicks a lot…Oblivion and Collateral
I’m on board with your thoughts. I thought Far and Away was cool, other than he was always screaming in that movie. Now that I’m thinking about it. I liked Taps and Risky Business. Not so much Tom Cruise, but for Rebecca De Mornay. I kind of liked Minority Report also.

Saw it yesterday and not too much to add other than see it, it's great. I'm sure the capabilities were somewhat exaggerated, but that's okay it's a movie. Not to be a downer, but although the movie makes you proud and lifts your spirits, I couldn't help but think of the real shape of our government and who's running the show.:(

We definitely intend to see the new version. We rewatched the original recently, which I recall liking when it came out. But, upon rewatching it, I now found parts of it very hokey and predictable. Some of the lines spoken by the guy running the carrier were beyond dumb. I was most impressed by Val Kilmer during the rewatch. I couldn't help thinking about his Doc Holiday role in Tombstone, played not that long after TG. Amazing. The guy does good work. Lastly, I can't recall any actual hot, US-Soviet, fighter air to air combat during the cold war. Maybe there were some?

Definitely worth the 36 year wait.

The first movie ignited the fire of patriotism in people and this will too, for me that fire is always blazing and this movie threw jet fuel on that fire. The same but not the same Maverick, they did great with Val Kilmer.

We watched the first movie last night so the kids knew the story line and while they showed the past a little my kids said it would have been fuzzy had they not seen the original, also they wouldn't have understood the tension between Iceman and Maverick which flows into this movie between 2 different actors.

Definitely a must see in the theater. "I'm not supporting that industry" is a BS excuse, if this is the last movie you see in the theater you will be happy with it being this movie, I promise.

Go see it

We saw it on Memorial Day. Great movie. I could have done without the 20 minutes of BS stupid previews of movies that I know I will never see.
But the move was really good and well done, I especially liked the end when he flew his P-51 Mustang.

Sadly, I wouldn't doubt it. I still have CD's and LP's too. Oh well, when the solar flares hit and the emp's fry us...I'll still have my LP's to listen to.
Ya'll are screwed!
Yep, I'll be listening to Deep Purple and Jefferson Starship.

We saw it yesterday. Wife and I both seriously enjoyed it. May go back and see it again in 4Dx. Never done that before; worth trying.

I had two negative observations:

1) The mission itself was a total ripoff of Star Wars #1. Hit the hole deep in the Death Star and you'l blow it to pieces. The approach, and the shot were basically the same scene. And

2)...

Straight called out Iran as well as the only country that has and still operates f-14s.
I didn't think they ewer mentioned the enemy by name. And it pissed me off cuz it seemed like woke type shit. Did I miss a direct reference? Or only the loose callout by using an F-14?

My wife and I went Tuesday around dinner time. Tickets were only $8.50 and a giant tub of popcorn was $7.00. There were five other people in the theater. Great movie! Jennifer Connelly is holding up pretty well.

Iran does have nearly new F14's but they are non-operational

Movie magic for sure. Most of the flights scenes were filmed in Fallon. The base scenes were shot at Lemore. Yet it all "took place" in Miramar. LOL.

I saw it today, and really enjoyed it.

They did that in the first movie. Fake airplane name of a mig-28 and an un named pacific country.

They also don’t mention the Su-57 felon as the 5th gen fighter.

We rendered our f14 fleet inoperable and destroyed the parts that could be transferred to Iran. All spares got ground up. Iran's tomcat at fleet is flyable, just not too many of them.

they also have the only 747 refueling plane

Saw it earlier today. Great movie if you understand the time period of the first one. Probably far too patriotic for the current generations when considering what the big picture is really about. The actual flying scenes make the movie.

Just got home from seeing, great movie. Haven’t been to the theatre in almost 10 years and noticed how rude people have become. Burps, a fart, conversations, etc.
