ive always like making build threads for offroad trucks through the years (on other sites) becasue sometimes its fun to have a place to go and look back on stuff...
so here i am with my new to me hallett vector
its rockin twin mercury xr2 150s and im told its the only vector to leave the factory with the idea that itd have twin outboards

i got it in somewhat rough shape mechanically. more on that later
aesthetically its my dream boat. the guy i got it from buffed out the gel, put complete new interior, and did some other work to it to make it look great. he never got it wet though.
it needed a few things to completely look the part though. i have since taken the engines apart and repainted the mounting brackets, lowers and mids and im working on the clam shells right now.
it also has a huge offshore engine mounting box with 26inches of offset. i thought to do away with the whole thing and build my own billet set back bracket but i thought "what the hell, lets see what this things all about" so i just repainted it instead to make it look new.

mechanically. it needs a lot.
the wiring is a disaster, most gauges didnt work.
none of the hydraulic systems worked.
one of the oil tanks for the oil injection system had a broken fitting so when i was compression testing it before buying the whole bilge was just filling up with oil HA. that was fun

so here we are a few months into me owning it and most things are fixed. the engines are ready to be bolted on and the whole thing will get re plumbed in time to enjoy this summer!

here are a few pictures from when i picked it up

I dig it. Looks like a stainless marine set back. They are built to help provide flotation. Keep it just make sure it’s sealed up good between it and the transom. you have some serious knee braces to offset the strain. Put some bigger tabs on it like 24-28”. Run your motors till you come across a deal on a pair of newer/higher hp ones. Cool project.

Yeah I’ve been reading that they can provide a bit more buoyancy. We’ll see!
I did try taking it off and couldn’t get it to even move. That 3m 5200 is no joke lol. No doubt that it’s sealed but also There’s a bulge pump inside it incase I miss any spots. Just need to make sure I get all the bolt holes good.
The plan for next summer is finding some optimax 250s we’ll see if the box stays or not.
No doubt the transom can support it. Those braces are 3” thick!

Very cool, hard to believe a boat that looks that good and nice interior is in such disrepair.

So Hardin is 6 weeks out on the dual engine split foot pedal. Anyone out there have any tricks or pictures for making a regular foot pedal work with two merc cables?

Are you trying to split it to control each engine individually? I've seen that on twin ob before. Or simply operate two cables with one pedal? I may be able to help, where are you located?

i think to simplify things i just want to use a regular pedal to pull two cables. i got some pictures from a friend of how his is set up and now that i see it its waayyyy simpler than my brain was making it haha
im in the corona area
eddie marine gave me a 2-3week lead time on their fabricated pedal so i may go that route unless someone on here has one for sale that i can get my hands on right now!

Love the boat! Stay on top of the guys over at Eddie Marine. I ordered some goodies from them awhile back, and had to call several times to make sure I got what I paid for. Be patient with their time estimation re: shipments. 😉

Yes sir!
Got one engine reassembled after painting all its components and mounted it on the freshly painted set back plate

Also Drew up some new battery boxes and had them powder coated black to church up the bilge area a bit.

Right now I’m working on a rear bulkhead beauty plate to cover the ugly exit hole for all the engine plumbing and wiring.

Lots of progress today on the transom exit for all the wiring plumbing and throttle cables.
It had a ugly rectangle hole where everything just kind of came out in a mess so I made a beauty plate which holds two rigging hose bezels which will hide each engines wiring and fuel lines and one center bezel for the steering hoses and throttle cables.
Put it all together just to take it apart again to send the plate to powder coat haha

That looks really nice, nice job. I like the shape rather than making a simple rectangle. What color will it be?

Got all my parts back from the coating shop so the assembly has started!
heres that plate i made with the rigging hoses. still need throttle and shifter cables to be routed through the center hole
IMG_2946.jpg

brought the original marker light back to life. super stoked i got this thing working again. the bulb socket was rused and corroded to all hell
IMG_2939.jpg

all the steering parts are freshened up with new heims and such. not a huge fan of the tie bar location. ive seen some black max engines with wing plates (i think thats what theyre called) up by the cowlings...anyone know who makes those? for now, this will work
IMG_2941.jpg IMG_2940.jpg IMG_2942.jpg IMG_2945.jpg

trim tabs
IMG_2944.jpg

next up is removing all the decals from the cowlings and putting some new ones on to match the boat.

It's coming together! Some time ago I was looking around on Ebay and ran across a wing plate for an outboard. I can't remember who the seller was, but I think the manufacturer of the plate was "Stainless Marine." I could be wrong. I remember the seller being from South Florida.

If you're a member on Scream and Fly, that may be a good place to check too. 👍

Got the fuel drained and steering aligned Yesterday. As for alignment… anyone have input of toe in or out? How much and where to measure from?
I set it up with 1/4” toe in measuring from the end of the prop shaft and very front of the lower unit.

Now I’m starting on rewiring the dash because I’d very much like to keep this boat and not lose it in an electrical fire 😂

Annnnnnd here comes that snowball! 🤣 I know what you mean though, you'd rather not lose it the first time out when its something you most likely could have prevented.

I was in the same boat as you with our Daytona. 🙄

Take your time and do your best to clean everything up. Buy quality materials designated for marine installations and you'll be better off in the end. 👍

haha no kidding. i bought this boat knowing it was a project so no surprise here. wiring is one of my favorite items to get to on a project so its all good!
whoever wired this boat ran a 20 foot 12ga wire to power an entire fuse panel 😅

Did I say rewire the DASH? I meant the whole boat😂 only thing that’s good is the engine harnesses.
Here’s some of the waste

Got all the wiring buttoned up just gotta wire my trim switch. Pretty happy with the outcome.

Also hid this little guy in the glove box. Gauge for both batteries and usb chargers. Wanted to keep it hidden so that the outside looks as original and old school as possible.

The dash is pretty much done for now. In the future I’d like some new gauges and a billet glovebox door (if I don’t decide to fill it and re gel the dash)
For now. A new steering wheel will complete it soon. Also going on week 4 of my 2 week lead time throttle pedal lol😂

For anyone who has a trim switch mounted to the steering wheel, how are you running the wires? Do you let a coiled loom hang or???

so went to pick up my 2 week lead time foot throttle today. (week 4) and they built the wrong one. i ordered a pull and they gave me a push. luckily i checked it out while i was still there. soooo the wait continues. lol

today i put the engines back together. fresh carbs, oil injection delete, and new fuel and vacuum lines throughout both engines! going to fire them up tomorrow on the hose! super exciting cuz i have yet to hear them run

the engines needed a little more love than expected. fuel pump diaphragms were toasted. the local west marine had one in stock so i picked it up and ordered another for the other engine. rebuilt the fuel pump and she was running beautifully!

picked up some bimini mounts while i was at eddie marine, ripped em apart and powder coated em black. im super happy with the way the black hardware is bringing this boat together. at first i was nervous about the decision to do all black but now i think it was the right call.

look what finally showed up today lol. got it in a comfortable spot and bolted it to the floor. measuring for cables tomorrow.
IMG_3141.jpg IMG_3143.jpg

im taking one last desert trip this weekend but i should be testing the boat for the first time the following! were very excited to see it in the water for the first time

That's an interesting fuel hose exit point. I guess its not really in the way of anything but strangely in the middle of the floor. Great looking boat. I kill 10 gallons in a solid Saturday with my XR4. I feel for your gas budget with double 2 smokers lol.

Those mids are going to break where the studs for the tie bar is. You don't particularly need one there anyway with the one connecting the tiller arms up top.

how long till they break cuz that tie bar has been there since 1989
also, if i dont need it there...that would mean theres no forces back there pulling or pushing the engines apart ya? meaning theres no forces to break the studs?
im just thinkin outloud.

i have however been on the hunt for some wingplates (i think thats what theyre called??)

Well she saw water today. Things went good and bad and then good.
One engine felt down on power. Didn’t want to run or idle but after a bit it ran enough to take some laps around the local lake.
The boat rode beautifully. It got a decent amount of bow hop if I slowed down less than 30mph but anything over that was a dream.
Got home checked spark and I’m not getting any spark at #3 & 5 on the port engine.
So I gotta figure that out and head back out there.
She looks damn good in the water though! Lots of late nights in the making of this photo.

Great job man! Even with the drives tucked in you get some hop? Mine does also, but I don't think all the way to 30mph?

The Allison Cav plates might be a good investment. I am getting some for mine. That thing will EAT water.

Awesome you got it in the water!

That set back bracket definitely gives you a decent amount of floatation. I think ours with a single 250 sits lower in the water.

What props are you running?

I could be wrong on the speed considering I was just memorizing rpm to gps speed from one of my buddies phones.. but ya it got a good amount of hop
Can you post a pic of the cab plate you’re talking about?
I am gonna make some longer tabs that will bolt On to my existing ones. Right now they are 10”. I’ll probably cut some 16” and 20” and play with em.
Also thought about putting some weight bags way up in the bow.
That’ll be the fun set up stuff. Right now I just gotta get the engines right!

Which 250 do you have on yours?
Also what are you seeing speed wise? I’m considering a single engine in the future. That’s why I ask.

The boat came with 19s and 23 pitch Mercury props. I didn’t bother with the 19s and have only ran the 23s so far
