Sad to hear two men from Arizona lost their lives yesterday afternoon on the famous Moab Rim Trail. A mechanical malfunction is suspected as the cause of the rollover that led the Jeep to roll down the cliff.
The occupants only identified as a 56 and 47 years old pending notification of kin..
RIP.

Prayers and thoughts. As a side note , 3 people were killed 2 weeks ago in Kingman when their UTV was crossing the railroad tracks , one train passed and they didn’t see the other coming . Those tracks are busy !

The three Golden Valley AZ residents killed were extremely dedicated 4- wheelers and well known in the area. They were nearing the end of a group ride, when the slower first train passed, the two vehicles took off first to cross the 2nd set of tracks, but the 2nd train's view had been blocked by the 1st and both vehicles got hit. 😢

Very steep. If you go off the side, you can roll all the way down to the road, along the Colorado River. These guys are near the bottom, but they came from the top of the mountain.

If you’re afraid of heights, I’d avoid that trail. A couple of buddies couldn’t handle being on the edge, and decided to skip it. Freaked them out when they would look to the left going up and all they could see was the edge. I told them don’t look that way, and all would be fine.[emoji23]. One buddy broke his ride and got a rental Jeep, Moab rim was the only trail they told he wasn’t allowed on. Being the nice guy, I let him take my brand new Jeep up, after I finished it.[emoji3]

Brings back memories of 2010, when one of my close high school buddies and his friend were killed in a Kern County jeeping accident. They rolled it down a 100' plus embankment, and neither one was wearing restraints.

That was classic Tom. He never went in for the rules, but this time he paid up for it. Miss you, bro.

Is this the trail that ends at the massive cliff over looking Colorado? My sick wife thought it was cool for a selfie at the edge, hate that shit when she does that.

Damn, I had some fun with Tom. Went to Elephant Butte with Pierre's 24' Fiberform cruiser regularly, once the shitter blew back when he was flushing it for Patty and he had little toilet paper bits all over him. That was a good one.

Tom and Jimmy Mangham were my wingmates on our epic trip to California in my new T/A during the summer of '73. We decided it was a good idea to go at 8 PM on a Friday night, and by midnight we had convinced our parents to let us go and were on I-40 heading west. I'm still amazed by that, I was 16, TJ was 17, and Maggot was 18.

We were stopped by an AZ trooper near Williams going 90 something, he let us go. I was flat out at 145 driving through the Mojave desert, and we made the 750 mile trip from Albuquerque to Riverside in just over 9 hours. We were staying with Tom's aunt, and Wednesday morning bought a case of beer and headed for Newport Beach on the 91.

I'd never even thought of police helicopters at that time. Hell, we were rubes from New Mexico. Me passing cars on the freeway going near 100 caused a motorcycle tire to roll up next to my door in the beach parking lot just as I opened it. There were 14 empties in the car. At the station, Officer Dome called my Mom collect. It's funny I still remember his name. After a couple of hours they let us go.

She told me to get my ass home, so we did...through Las Vegas to see my cousins. They were in their 20s, one was a dealer at a strip casino. His note got us into the all nude Palamino Club with my other cousin, and after that we headed for Sherri's in Pahrump. On the way we had to stop, Tom got out and was puking in the middle of the two lane highway. I mean on the yellow line LOL.

Thirty five bucks later we headed back to Vegas, and left the cousins at 2 AM for Albuquerque. We stopped at Hoover Dam, and Tom rolled a beer can down the face.

I let Maggot drive, and when we were switching places, he discovered he had dropped his wallet at the whorehouse. Oh, well. This became a problem just before dawn when a bunch of bright lights on the back bumper of the car suddenly revealed an AZ trooper about 4' from our ass. Jimmy was going a buck five.

He explained about the lost wallet, including where it happened. The guy has no filters, LOL. I wanted to melt into the seat. My parents were going to kill me. The cop told him "Come back to my car, you're gonna blow and we're going to see if you all go to jail." Miraculously he passed, and we were again allowed to go, along with the ticket for 99 MPH. That kept Mag from losing his license.

We made it home without further incident, and you can believe me when I say Tom and I didn't do as much as drink a beer for weeks. The parents were a bit upset by our adventures. As a good postscript, Maggot's wallet showed up in the mail a couple of weeks later.

Tom loved life, he loved Cheryl and the kids. Fonda and I stopped to see them in '91, when they lived in Alamogordo. He was the same good looking and wisecracking friend. I hold those memories dear, it was the last time we saw each other. I'm glad he got to move back to California. He considered it home.
