I decided to build my self a UDS after reading a lot of threads on the subject. Wednesday I bought a barrel and a bunch of parts to get started.

I am looking forward to seeing how this turn out. How are you gonna get the barrel clean? A long hot burn?

Next step was to lay out and drill the intake holes around the bottom. There are four total with one having a ball valve and the others capped.

I built the charcoal basket with a weber charcoal grate for a 22" grill (the coal grate is 17.5" dia) with some #9 expanded metal around it with a 16" pizza pan under to help catch some of the ash.

After the burn the barrel still had some junk left inside and a little of the paint on the outside so I took it to get sandblasted to ensure there wasn't anything left in the cooking area.

Next step drill four holes around the top to hold cooking grate. It's a 22" weber grill. Then a hole for the thermometer. Once those were drilled I started painting with a coat of high heat then the color of the barrel which is blue.

A buddy of mine (DeltaRat on the boards) cut notches in the top of the barrel so you can put 3 rebar rods across the top to hang meat on while smoking. He also has an upper grate and can use either method. works great.

I got a piece of 2" pipe to put in the hole that was already there and got a chrome exhaust tip to put over it.

Ya I have seen a lot of different ones over the past few months while I was researching this. This barrel seems a little short so I put the grate at 6" from the top to keep it away from the coal.

With that all done the final step was to stencil the front and my son hooked me up with the stencil he made at school. The final step will be the top handle but it won't be here till Wed. it's a yankees mini bat that I will mount to the lid.

Nothing ugly about that, nicely done.
I have a drum I bought just before a deal on an upright smoker came along. Now the drum is sitting on the side of the house. These kind of threads make me want to pull it into the garage and get r done.

Thanks! I will do another one soon thinking it will have an 88 on the front.
I have a test burn going right now with less than a 1/4 chimney of kingsford and a few chunks of mesquite it's at 210 and chugging along.

Yes!!!! The mini bat showed up today so I was able to finish it. Also added a hook to the lid to hang it on the side.

Nice build that looks great:)

I have built 2 of them and we use them a ton. No plans to paint it as it sits outside at the river and shiny things dissapear.

They hold there temprature and put out a ton of food.
