I have a 1960 rocket v-drive and I am leaking at the through hull. I just went out and loosened the gland nut to prepare for re-packing and noticed 2 things that I did not expect to see. First, the gland nut has a grease fitting tapped into the body of the nut...second, I see no packing in the gland nut. Can you guys that know give me any recommendations as to what is happening here? Thanks a million in advance!!!

What I mean is has anyone seen a grease fitting in the gland nut? Is there supposed to be packing in there or is this something new. I have owned this boat for only a short period of time. New to v-drives but mechanically inclined. I cant imagine that the grease pocket replaces the stuffing....and seals up?

Here is a photo of the gland nut and assembly. upon further investigation, it appears that there is an o-ring at the top of the nut.

Well, i went on the assumption that the nut did need packing and the zerk fitting was to grease the packing. i am taking her out to the lake friday to get the correct tork on the nut and see if it holds back the water. Will post the results upon return.....

Looks like someone modified the nut with the grease fitting. Not that it wont work, seems like you will still need the waxed or Teflon impregnated packing...

Mine has two double lip seals with the Grease fitten in the middle with a water injection fitten between the Grease seal and shaft strut bushing at the open end towards the water.
