When you "dont want the money" why would you put yourself through the agony of reliving it every day in a court case? To prove a point?

I would almost bet Kobe push that pilot to fly that day.. just my opinion

Just heard on John & Ken she was awarded $16 million.
John is fuming as I guess the $16 million will come from a tax on LA County residents and not the individuals or departments etc.?
He was ranting saying, "Why in the hell do I have to pay for those morons stupid actions, I wasn't there, I didn't take the pictures, and I didn't share them !!!!. . . but yet You're gonna penalize Me"?????? . . . he's got a good point.

If pictures were being shared from fireman and cops of your child’s mutilated and burned body for other peoples entertainment and you had the legal money and team to be sure these pics never see the light of day I think I would do the same.

These pictures were grotesque and morbid and were being shared at a wedding and a bar for laughs. If you’ve ever seen a body when it’s flattened from an impact like that it’s quite creepy to use it as entertainment.

I’d protect my dead husband/wife and child, along with the others, if I had the money to do so too.

It doesn’t matter if Kobe pressed on the pilot to do something he shouldn’t have. Ultimately the pilot made the decision and he’s the one who made the decision to fly that day. It was extremely poor decision making on the pilots part, not Kobe.

Pretty messed up all the way around. But in that line of work that is what they are used to. Death and mutilation. Was it right to take pictures? Not really the issue. Was it right to share with others outside the circle?? That's where they fucked up. You don't think doctors take pics of fucked up shit and share them. It is human nature. We are all fucked up in the worlds we live in. One of my customers I found out was a program director at the Mamba academy. Kobe's death pretty much ended his presence there. And I agree the pilot was pressured to fly that morning as in get me there or I will find someone who will. What I don't understand is how he flew it into a mountain. He had a freeway to follow. Bring up maps on your phone and follow the blue dot down the freeway at 1000 ft or so. To bad it wasn't lebron.

I know a guy who's tight with husband of a wife who went down on that chopper. Word is Kobe was known to push pilots and that shouldn't be news to anybody.

LA County taxpayers have been footing the bill for settlements for years.

The pictures happen more often than make the news. As said, pretty F'd up, but true. In one of my stints in driving school as a kid, we had to watch a film called "Red Asphalt III"...automotive version of "Faces of Death". This was in the mid-90's. I'm pretty sure those in the film, and next of kin, didn't sign releases. Who took those pics and videos? My guess would be coroners and first responders.

When stories get out that pics are shared, I would think the family has every right to sue. The problem is, they must have the means to hire an attorney willing to go against the city/county/state. Years back I remember a father going after OC. Someone shares pics of his daughter. She had taken his car, higher end, think a Porsche maybe, and died in a wreck on the 241. It was a couple years in court.

As for subjecting yourself to it repeatedly...the images are forever burned in your mind. I don't know if seeing it or talking about it more makes it worse. The images don't go away.

I know this won't ever happen . . . BUT, if they took that $31 Million out of the Fire Departments and Sheriffs Department Budget and said, "Your're the fuckers who took the pictures, You pay for this shit" . . . I guarantee the Fire Chief ad Sheriff would crack some skulls and put an end to that shit.
So there's really no deterrent for the cops & firemen to not pull that shit again and again . . . .no punishment for the crime . . . sounds very familiar, and I see a pattern here.
Good ol California.

Some people are more tenacious than others about seeing justice done.

I was amazed at the hoops homeowners were willing to jump thru to see a contractor disciplined, or his license revoked. We're talking low thousands of dollars at issue, and it wasn't about the money . Homeowners would spend hours upon hours answering questions, sitting thru interviews and admin hearings, and ultimately traveling to DTLA, at their expense, to get grilled by a deputy attorney general and defense attorney. All in the the pursuit of justice, not money.

What those deputies did was wrong. It's no different than being entrusted with government secrets and then sharing them. You gotta be more professional than succumbing to curiosity seekers. Otherwise, leave that position.

Remember the uproar and divide on RDP over the toll road, Porsche crash in the OC a few years back...sounds similar

My understanding is that LASD and Fire had no policy on this. Can anyone confirm? Also, say a citizen was first on scene and took pictures in a public setting and then shared or showed the pictures. Same outcome?

As a Lead captain on a Gulfstream G450 for a private owner. I have had to tell private owners I have worked for in the past "you don't pay me to say yes everytime. You pay me to say no when its unsafe", but also with that I have a plan or solution to still get the mission complete for my owner.

In a way, remembering those movies well is a good thing. Those images on that screen are gone. I remember seeing the film, but not one frame stands out.

Ask me about other stuff I've seen in person...could tell you the song on the radio, the smell of the air...the color shoes or design on the T-shirt. Those images pushed the others out I think.

It was stupid to post the pictures but if they didnt profit them they are not harmed to the extent of the judgement.

I see raking back profits but that is insane.

Were these ultimately released to the public or just "shared" amongst a few?

There’s no excuse. Lost Hills Sheriff/LA County Fire deals with every Malibu, Calabasas, Hidden Hills etc incident. Mel Gibson DUI, Brittney Spears on a rampage etc.

Somehow photos weren’t taken in those situations. It’s bad taste, and unfortunately tax payers get to foot the bill.

I have no problems at all when the Capt announces that he/she doesn’t what to fly the plane for any reason. 👍

If you got 15 million the county got off cheap what a bunch of idiots taking those photographs and put them out. What a brain surgeon would do that you know it would end up with your sewer water backing up.

The county did get off cheap, the tax payers will pay for this.

I am in disagreement with a cash settlement, the offenders should be fired and lose their retirements. I can't see how a cash payment makes any sense here, it was very poor judgement, but knowing it could cost the employees everything should stop it from repeating. Sometimes shit sucks, but doesn't always mean a payday. JMHO

That helicopter burned on impact. The first responders had no clue who was on board. I'm sure the remains were charred and unrecognizable with pieces everywhere.

I still fail to see why the county or dept has to pay for individual stupidity.

Give the pensions away, attach their wages for the rest of their lives, why should the taxpayer have to pay?

More individual responsibility, less democracy and socialism. Did they even loose their jobs? What's the point?

And really, the deceased are fucking dead. They give zero shits, because they can't anymore. If they can give this sort of judgement to pictures and video, why are not all the people who film and post assaults/murders/crimes/arson/looting etc in fucking jail as well? Makes zero sense.

More divisionism, literally if you have enough money, you can do whatever the fuck you want.

The working class people looking for justice, get woke...because there is no such thing in this world anymore.

The deputies may not have initially known who the deceased were. In any event you are a Le professional and conduct yourself accordingly.
That said. Don’t they and other agencies first on scene take pictures of the area and people.
Not saying sharing them with others.
But then again if this wasn’t Kobe none of this would even be news.

This is true, I'm sure whoever handles investigations takes pics. I think they're supposed to keep them in the file though, and not circulate the stuff.
Like you said though, not big news or big payouts like this for normal folk.

I’m pretty sure that there have been other incidents where identifiable celebrities death photos have been leaked . My understanding is that none of theses photos made it out for the public to view.

The settlement was for the fear the photos went public.
Just the fear...

My cousin’s daughter went to school with Kobe’s daughter in NPB. She and her parents have only the best to say about the Bryant family, both Kobe and Vanessa. ANYONE taking photos of helpless-lifeless victims, then sharing them for sensational reasons with others is scum. In this case it appears they were FF and LEOS, we assume. Let’s name those scums, regardless of who they were. Taxpayers will now have to pay for their low life actions. If they were public employees, let’s hear who they were. It may be interesting to follow their careers.

To begin, what kind of idiot ass hole would take those photos? If they were truly First Responders they would know official photogs would be there soon. To what extent were those photos spread? Solution - Don’t take the photo.

Let’s get some names. Who were they?
