Hey,

I hope all are well

I managed 89 mph this summer with my Phantom 25 1984 model. 400R. 7,060 rpms. This with all vent hulls open. We will close them to see if we can get the slip down fx 1% and get 90 mph.

I am hitting the rev limiter, and consider to by a 5 blade 26/26,5 CNC cleaver from Mercury. I read that a Bullet with a 300R managed 107 mph with a CNC and 103 with the Max5.

The issue is that I have to buy to try... So the question is if the CNC can do the trick.

Cheers, Toffen

I can tell you that we had an F26 with 400’s. It hit 122 with regular props and 129 with cnc props. They do work. But at 5k a prop? [emoji15]

Hey!

Thanks :)

Here are som stats about the boat over the years. I have owned it for 20 years now, and reworked it with new transom, electrical set up, strengthended foredeck in divycell, blueprinted bottom, new interior, etc.

1984-1999: Johnson V8 3.6 GT 300 = 76 mph
1999-2006: Promax 300 SVS = 76 mph
2007-2010: Twin Merc 2.5 EFI SS with Brucato Pcu = 86 mph
2011-2017: Verado 350 Sci = 81 mph
2017- : Verado 400R = 89 mph (potentsially 90 mph under better conditions)
2021 - : Merc 500R = 103 mph :)

hard to imagine the single 400 bested the twin 2.5 280s by 3 mph?NO way this would be the case with tunnel,so might be related to heavy Vbottom or lowers buried to deep??

Hey,

We ran the CLE lowers even with the bottom without setback. A classic setup. The boat was made for offshore races, at that time with twin Xr2's. We tried various heights and props. The best speed with blueprinted Mirage props. Faster than Choppers, Hydromotives, etc. Best speed 87 mph. Accellerated like an animal - on plane in one - 1 - second. When it hooked up with 4bl props it jumped in plane. Great fun. But expensive indeed...

That said, with Max5 props (not available at that time) we may well gained some speed.

Received this from Merc :)

Toffen, Always happy to answer your questions, it sounds like your Phantom is getting dialed in! At 89 mph you are getting a very impressive 6.8% slip. The Max5 and the CNC do run equal in terms of pitch, so I think you are right in considering a 26 pitch CNC to get you off of the rev limiter. If you can swing the 26 up to 7000 rpm, you will see around 94 mph, thanks to the CNC having about 4.5% slip. If the 26 drops you down to 6900 rpm, expect to be going 92 mph. As for rake, it is a bit tricky. We have had some luck with V-bottoms running 15 degree rake to keep the ride flat at top speeds, but I can’t say for sure with your set up. Thank you for the great information!

Toffee, great to hear from you.

And how fast did I tell you that was going to go when you put it on?;)

Nice work. Can’t wait to see the results with the CNC if you get it. Maybe you should take delivery at Key West Worlds...

HI!

Good to hear from you ! You are soon over 100 mph with yours soon :)

For me managing 89 mph is unreal with that old heavy offshore racer. So I am super happy. But... maybe we can squeeze another 3-5 mph out if.

Unfortunately no trip to The Keys this year, but Miami Boatshow is more likely.

Speak soon !

  • I can't see how spending $5k for that prop for an extra 3mph makes any sense. JMO
