According to the South Bend Intelligencer in an article dated 9/10/2001:
A South Bend, Indiana man was arrested after relieving himself at a local playground on Wednesday. Peter Pete Buttigieg, 19, was “clearly drunk” according to police when he urinated on the jungle gym at the playground on 5th and Jenkins.
Police say that they found the teen “with his ‘Hammer pants’ around his ankles” urinating and that he simply waved when they first approached with a “grin on his face.”
Officers say the man got their attention when they heard him screaming “whoo” at the “top of his lungs.” When they turned on their lights, they say Buttigieg tried to run. But they caught up to him. Two friends scattered but were picked up by police after Buttigieg gave them their names.
The teen was charged with indecent exposure, public intoxication, underage drinking, contributing alcohol to a minor, and resisting arrest.
Buttigieg was charged with a sex offense modifier because he chose a playground as the place to do his business and because one of the teens he was with was 16. But thanks to family connections — including his father who is a lawyer and his brother, who is a district court judge, he got most of the charges dropped.
Buttigieg served no jail time and did community service for “disturbing the peace.”
His friends, on the other hand, weren’t so lucky. One boy served 4 months in a juvenile detention center and the other adult he was with, a 42-year-old man, served three years in prison.
