So I've really never done much traveling. Ca az hi... that might be it. I've been watching these house shows w my wife and it's really got me thinking. I would love to live somewhere where I could boat right up to my house. Needles has some nice homes but where else? I know Florida would be cool. Lucky strike has a really nice set up. I'm a long ways from retiring but I don't think it's ever to early to kind of day dream about stuff. The other thing is a lot of these house go for cheap. Or I don't mean cheap but it seems like you get a lot more for your money outside of California. Like some of these beautiful homes are cheaper than what I paid in chino. Anyways let's get a list of states/areas/lakes/canals whatever

We watch Beachfront Bargains all the time and think the same thing. We might cash out one of these days and move to a beach front mansion in Alabama.

My friend has a lake front house he rents in Minnesota on Pelican Lake. It is a pretty nice setup. Rents to ice fisherman and snowmobilers in the winter and boaters in the summer. I've been waiting for a place to come up for sale nearby.

Waterfront homes can be had on Lake Norman, NC for under 800k. At least a few years ago...

We have spent quite a bit of time in Florida and found out you can have a real nice home, pool, dock for the boat for a great price. If we did not have a daughter in Henderson I think we would be on our way to Florida around AJs area.

There's a reason why various water front property is "cheap" (aka cheaper than florida or Ca). Usually has to do with the extended winter months and / or ungodly humid and hot July / Aug months. With that said, there's a ton of cool cities through-out Florida that are affordable and you could prob cash out the house you're in now for a place in a canal straight across. And Florida is gorgeous 9 months out of the year. The other three you have to hide inside with the AC blasting. Many can't do 110 degrees and 100% humidity ;)

Look at lake Coeur d' alene in north Idaho and tell me how u feel about those prices. [emoji6] [emoji202]

Coeur d' alene is awesome but again...Only really 2 months out of the year if you want to enjoy sunny days on the water. The rest of the time it's freezing ass cold.

We have property on Lake Pend Oreille up the road a bit;)

What is up with the property taxes on this place? Any idea on what they should be for a place like this in OK.?
I'm not sure what the taxes are but you sure get a lot for your money here. A buddy of mine just had a place built here on the lake last year. He also has a custom boat house for his bass boat and his 32' boat. I'm thinking this could be my retirement future...

Around $3000 - $5000 a year.

Grand Lake is closed though. Maybe something in Texas is open?

I can say you won't find much better waterfront homes and boating to go along with it
I've lived in SE Florida on and off my whole life.
When I decided to sell (east coast) and move to the gulf or west coast it was night and day.
The same house I bought here $500k and change is with a mill 2 on the east coast
And quite honestly better boating, just here in Cape Coral we have over 760 miles of canals and Waterways Hardly see any cops with the exception of holiday weekends
Plus everyone (for the most part are very nice people)
Plus the lowest crime in Florida
For the life of me I could not see myself Ever Boating out west Ever again
You guys in Ca are nutty lol

AJ,
In your location, how long of an Idle do you have to get out to water where you can get up on plane? I have 5 more years then Im pulling the trigger on Cali and never looking back. FL has the benefit of not taxing a gov pension so it entices me that much more. THX.

Moving out of Calif. was the best decision I have ever made.We brought a lot and built a house on Isles of Capri which is Southwest Florida. We are at speed in 5 mins. and your choices of places to boat to are endless.Just buy a lot where you want to be and wait till you have the money to build your dream home.

^This!

I've only been out for a month or two but already have de-stressed. Well, except for having to make trips back to pick up all my stuff.

On Saturday, I made a trip down to pick up a Jeep I just bought in Chino. Made it down in good time (it's about 425 miles) but saw a wreck on the 15 north at 138 and it was backed up south of the 210. By the time I got to Chino and got the Jeep loaded up it must have gotten worse. Waze directed me to the 210 to 5/14 north. Took me 2 hours to get to the 14 freeway. :(

I don't know how I put up with this for so long before escaping out. This was on a Saturday and not commute traffic. It seems like the amount of traffic has doubled over the last few years.

I'm not on the water but there is a decent lake about 10 miles away and Tahoe is an hour drive. I live in a town with no traffic lights, 2500 people scattered over 200 square miles. :thumbsup

Although I am on a small lake I could never not live on the water, there is just something about it.

You have yourself a little bit of paradise there, my friend. :thumbsup

Now That! is a heavy picture! you know, we enjoy boating, it's a great privilege. As much as we enjoy boating, we enjoy other things as well. Time with our family to us is #1. Then we do all sorts of other stuff, go skiing, snowboarding, going to water parks, the science museums, with the nieces and nephews, Disneyland when it rains to beat the traffic. ;) birthday parties, weddings, palm springs for the weekend. Head up to Bishop to go fishing, Vegas to the see newest casinos, driving up the coast to Santa Barbara, Staying in a shack in Santa cruz for a couple of nights on the water. Going wine tasting. This is certainly just a few of the memories we have.

We live in So cal. and fortunately for us, it's not as hard as the picture you state. I work 6 minutes away from my work. (7 if I hit a red light) No traffic to deal with at all. I found it easier to move my business closer to my house, then moving our entire family to another state that has no traffic.

The ride out for us to Havasu, which is done 4 maybe 5 times out of the year. We leave on a Thursday, we come home Sunday. No rush leaving the house. We get to our (rented) condo, with just 3 of us, and one luggage, we don't have much to carry into our condo. Our friends roll in late thursday sometimes early friday.

Boat get's launched Thursday and I haven't yet been to Windsor on Thursday and that it is busy, so I'm lucky there. We beach the boat at Kings View on the water and won't have to worry about retrieving it till we leave Sunday. 2 ao coolers of drinks and food and were off on our day.

Sunday, we are on the water at 6:00 am for a last session of wake boarding, surfing and we head to retrieve the boat. A quick wipe down of the boat with 3-4 people takes 15 minutes. We are at the condo, taking showers and hitting the road no later then 9:00 am. We've been doing this for almost 9 years now and to be honest, I enjoy the drive. Both in and out of Havasu. Getting into Havasu, we get to spend a good amount of time catching up with everyone with us, then when we are leaving, we are discussing all the fun things that happened on our trip. When our next trip is... some get some rest and we are home in 3:00-3:30 hours. (we live in Rancho Cucamonga).

This works for us. We don't visit Havasu as much as most here, but when we do, we really enjoy it. So our next trip up is always still exciting.

We have had a vacation home in Parker or Havasu for many years. I always felt the drive was family time where all of together could talk and enjoy the company. As a dad we were always on th go to sports things for the kids or other activists. The river time was like a break for the family. When we would get there around 9pm Friday night the girls would get their buckets and go look for for frogs. Great times with the kids.

Thanks,
Finally getting the weeds taken care of, we are approved to use a product called Clipper and it works great. Haven't been home much the last few years but chipping away at it.

It is amazing when you really start investigating it, how many states have really cool lakes with waterfront homes/docks etc.

We thought a fun 2 years would be to tow a 21' runabout behind a big RV and go see and boat as many as we could. In part it's those ideas that have us selling our river house.

We boated on Lake Hartwell several times when we lived in Atlanta. Big lake with very little traffic. House and lots at great prices.

We always wanted to drag the boat to Keowee and Jocassee but never did. Beautiful lakes from what we could see.

All are close to Greenville.

We spent our 5 years on Lake Sidney Lanier and loved every minute. Big lake that you can get away from crowds even on holidays and 1 hour to Atlanta at most.

You all would be shocked to see what you can buy on Lake Lanier, Hartwell, Keowee, etc. check out http://www.lakehouse.com/pg.php?pg=browse_map.

Was just at Hartwell last week. The house I was renting was 4 bedroom, 4 bath, 3600 sq ft 1/4 mile from the launch ramp and valued at $463k. Water on these lakes is all very clean, warm in the summer, tons of places to go.

It's a common misconception that those two things can exist with each other. They can't. At 110*, even 50% humidity creates a heat index of 151*. Heat index is when they say it "feels like" a temperature when it's another temperature. At 110*, a more common humidity level would be 20-25%, which would create a heat index of 112-117*. What you will get in the south a lot is 90* and 80% humidity, top of the scale for sure, but it happens. That's a heat index of 113*.
