We tow a steel horse trailer with 3 horses in mine from time to time and it handles it no issues. And it is only the 2.7L.

I prefer to use my F450, but if I am at race with the dirtbike hauler with my son, the wife and the F150 get horse duty if we have both things going the same weekend.
My trailer is 12” taller than standard enclosed trailers so it has a little more wind resistance. To clarify I can pull it at 75 but its in 7/8 gear and gas mileage is cut nearly in half. My company truck has the 2.7 and has a lot of giddy-up when empty, but it’s a 2WD extended cab so somewhat lighter than my 4WD crew cab. They are ‘16 and ‘17 respectively. Love the gas mileage though if I’m not towing.

How is doing 75 MPH on command struggling to tow? What was your expectation? Floor the truck, get to your destination. Who cares if it is in 7th or 8th gear? 7th is 1:1 and gears 8-10 are overdrive anyway.

Or spend $75k on a truck that will get worse fuel mileage when not towing, ride worse, be more costly to insure, register and maintain. But hey, you won’t have to press your foot down a little more your when you occasionally tow. :)

I guess you didn’t read the part about it being empty, not to mention gas mileage drops nearly in half. If your an F150 fan that’s great, I’d rather have some in reserve.

Struggling to tow and fuel economy while towing are 2 different things. You said it is “struggling” and then came back and said it’s doing 75 in overdrive. That isn’t struggling.

What does the gas mileage have to do with it struggling to tow? You bought a truck with a turbocharged engine. That is what happens when it makes power, it make boosts and drinks more fuel.

Loading the trailer with a car won’t change your mileage too much. It is the wind resistance of the trailer is affecting the mileage more than the weight.

You can tow with your F150 and get 9 MPG, or tow with a $75k diesel that “has some in reserve” and get 13 MPG. There isn’t any magic here.

Sorry I hurt your F150 feelings.

I tow with my $42k f150 and get 9mpg.

I had a 6.0 and 7.3 in the past. towing with my f150 is just fine...

Not to be a pest, but I was hoping you'd share this "Nanny" eliminating software you'd mentioned. 😁

Forscan is the software.

You will need a dongle like this

Here is a Forscan tutorial

Spreadsheet listing all the features you can enable/disable

Auto stop start disable and message disable is at the top of the list. I just disabled the message and got the autostop eliminator dongle.

Autostop eliminator dongle here - this is just plug and play. But without Forscan you will still get the message on the dash it is disabled, but you will never have to touch the button to turn it off.

I drive a 1 ton every day and I’m jealous of F150s lol.

If you need a 3/4 ton or 1 ton, you need it.

I would argue you don't "need" one if you just want to tow 7000 lbs at 1200 RPM once a month.

If you want one for that purpose, more power to you. Just don't complain about the cost.

Well that's a lot, thank you !!! The last option is probably the safest one 😁 Any other mods you made with the Forscan that's notable ?

Turned off all seatbelt notifications and all warning chimes
Made navigation useable while driving
Added an aftermarket subwoofer to the factory stereo via the factory subwoofer plug
Added a few extra pages/features to the gauge cluster

I don't think mine had piped in engine noises, but I disabled them.

There were a few other things I did that I have probably forgotten as it was 2 years ago now.

The dongle is worth the $90 just to not have to press the damn button every time you start the truck.

He turned on the piped in Brap Brap Like the Raptor has hahaha

Hell, I was just reading where I could shut the damned thing off. 😖 Oddly, I preferred the quiet of previous Eco-Platinum. They should have made the "Old Guy" exhaust mode 😂
I keep reading about how the new 2021 is supposed to have "Modes", similar to my wife's Audi, which in a couple of performance modes it makes the Eco-Buzz more of a V8 roar ( I'm paraphrasing), I'm curious what this sounds like and if an update to my 18' will be offered. I've listened to all the videos of the aftermarket exhaust and I think they sound worse, certainly not better.

What you need is the stock F150 "raptor killer" exhaust.

I would drop my 3/4 duramax in a heartbeat if I could get a 1/2 ton GMC.

My toyhauler is too heavy. I can probably tow my boats with a half ton but I still have two other trailers.

What really kills the half ton is the fuel mileage difference but that only matters if one tows a lot over a long distance. My boat is kept local so that negates that. I simply do not tow enough for the mileage to matter.

If I ever sell my RV I will switch back to half ton.

Half tons are smooth quiet and more responsive with the power and more than capable to tow most boats even mine. They are also a lot lighter.
