Agree TV has allot to do with it. But why is everyone ragging on the kids. Its obvious what the problem is.......its the parents. TV and electronics became the babysitter. Its not the kids fault....its the parents....some of the very parents posting in this thread, I'm including myself if we are being honest. Also people just don't mind there business either. I think that's a big part.
The mentality of buying teenage kids new cars because they are good kids and get good grades? I've never understood rewarding behavior for something you are supposed to do. I do get that some reward can go along way but if it because an expectation now there is a problem.
My wife and I are also guilty to an extent, someone posted about a team sport that they didn't keep score, just last night my wife signed our 9 year old son up for soccer for the first time ( he has been wanting to play). I said cool, she then said how it was structured that they don't keep score its about learning the game. I was like WTF. I said get him in a regular league. She then explained her rational, which was this league is less demanding then the others i.e. less money, no volunteer work, no practices during the week, no games on multiple days during the week, shorter schedule of games etc. She said practice and games are on the same day right after each other also. She says if he likes it then lets go full force. I can understand and accept that logic.
Everyone thinks its a generation thing, but I don't, its a parent thing that other parents took notice of and did the same thing. Some good things some bad, its the parent choice, if you don't like it, mind your business, unless there is some sort of abuse going one.
There are allot of young people who feel the same way. There are good young adults out there doing great things and then there are those that aren't. The same with all other generations. Its just that social media such as this site are constantly looking at who to blame, but mostly we know who but don't want to acknowledge or accept it.
Just my two cents.
For sure....
AYSO keeps score at that age and if you don't win you don't advance to the end of the season tournament. I have coached the last 4 years for my sons team and last year was the last straw. While most parents are great some are freaking terrible...late to practice, games and when there kids act like assholes they are nose deep in there phone.
So frustrating. I think a lot of parents force kids to play sports even though they have absolutely zero desire. I would a million times over rather have a kid that lacks talent and athletic ability on my team if he has a desire to play than a bratty, lazy video game kid as he just can't be coached. We have 9 y/o's that fall down and cry after every collision and mom needs to go out on the field for little boo boos....sissys
We will never go back to AYSO even though my son was recruited for there select team. Club is a huge financial obligation and a complete life sucker but I made him a deal and as long as he gives it 100% we will keep supporting him.
Sports are great for kids but that competition gene needs to be born and fed at home at a young age and can't be taught when they are 15 when the kid doesn't want to get off the ipad.
