I just picked up a boat with a 2.5 Merc 280 (bone stock motor), what fuel should I be running in it?

Do you guys ever worry about getting bad gas out of the pump? I hear of people mixing half 91 and half 100 oct race gas or running av gas just for precaution? I just want avoid blowing it up. Any thoughts?

The higher the octaine, the slower the burn. Raw fuel in you cyls is never a good thing. Use what merc recomends.

Use 91 OCT minimum from a quality station and I would use Mercury Premium plus oil mixed at 50:1. Mixing 91 OCT and race gas is ok, Im unsure about using ave gas in the outboard as is its indened burn rate is a slower RPM.

I think mercury recommends different octane for different levels of motors I spoke with mercury earlier this morning and they said I should run 87
on my 200 hp 2.5

Mercry recommends I use 92 oct. with my 2.5.....However, I only have 91 available at the pump. That is why I thought I should try adding some race gas to my pump gas.

I use 91 from a good station with Klotz R50 @ 40:1. I use enough Klotz octane booster to get at least to 92 when I am on a lake that only has 87.

98 280 com on a Lavey 20.2

Interesting on the 87 octane. I have a 88 150 blk max, I have only ever used 91 and Shell gas only, Never have i had any type of fuel issue. Granted mine is older and not disagreeing with what you were told, but I don't think i've ever heard of anyone being told to use 87.

Yep. I called Mercury twice just to make sure. Both took my serial number and second tech said I had the 1992 200hp 2.5 standard motor and use 87.

The kind with out any ethanol in it. Pure dinosaur juice is the only way to go. Don't know if you have that option in Kalifornia anymore though.

It's inevitable, any kind a gas, it's gonna blow!:D:D

That being said, I would run 91!

If it can't run pump gas from the dock and stay in the water overnight...
