Banzai looks great Dave !
I’ve often wondered how the project was progressing.

I hope Barry is doing well. Is the boat at your place ?
I’d love to see it

Hope all is well !!

Banzai
Barry McCown Blown fuel Hallet hydro hull. Made many passes over 150 mph.
Set the NDBA record at 161 and change. Engine builder - Bobby Sykes, Sr. worked for Keith Black & built the engines for Banzai.

So fast it literally pulls your skin back! :D

Banzai is looking AMAZING! The amount of gloss on the hull surpasses even the most elaborate Steinway! Beautiful!!!

Thanks all for the comments.
Dryhoze, boat is in Carlsbad, come on down anytime.
Barry is doin great!
Few shots at speed from Long Beach above.
I am Restoring the boat to this period.
Guy in white jumpsuit is Rich Hallett.
Keith Black hisself in cowboy hat warming the engine on first test day at Lake Ming in 1963 with Barry looking on.
Parker connection? Yup. Barry took it to the River one time and made a few passes for fun in 1964!

NRBR,
You are correct.
This coupling system was standard on just about all inboard flatbottoms and Hydros in the late 50’s early 60’s until the 4 bolt split collars came along. In fact most direct drive inboard Circle hydros and crackerboxes used them well into the 80’s. For the same reason as the early v-drive boats...no in/out capabilities so the chain would be taken off so the engine could be run out of the water.
The coupling itself is pretty darn stout given the load it needs to bare especially in a Hydro.
When setting up, I run the prop shaft all the way up into the v drive shaft and run a single key the length of it.
Really no problem under load because the prop is pushing the shaft forward. Problem is when you lift at high speeds the prop is trying to pull the shaft backwards! Dimpling the shaft and safety collars will do the trick.
Hope this explains it...
