So I'm browsing on letgo app and come across my boat/wheels and some other random items for sale that are in the driveway. Called the cops and they said they couldn't do anything and to report it to this website they gave me. What would you do? IMG_8341.jpg IMG_8343.jpg IMG_8344.jpg

I guess offer 400, go down and see it, then decide. Call the cops right before you arrive to make sure they show about the same time. I'm sure once thy are there they can run HIN

So I'm confused. You have a Schiada sitting in your driveway?

Offer 500 call the cops. I'm sure the rightful owner would be decent enough to more than reimburse you.

Granted a lot of headache for something that's not yours but hell of a good deed

Like others, I'd call and try and meet up with "seller" and have the cops there too... Second, I'd get that boat in a more secure location then the driveway.

I would watch out that someone is going to steal your boat.

Call and tell the guy you want to to buy it tomorrow, then sit out all night and wait

I think he is saying it is his stuff in his driveway and someone came by snapped a few pics and has it posted for sale.

Contact him and act interested from a non discript email or number?

Definelty call letgo.

That's exactly what happened.

Make a cash offer and go down there and go see what's what with the dude and ask him why he's selling your boat and wheels

The thing with that is he might have a bigger gun and faster hands. Probably some tweaker and he will get pissed that he got caught and come back later to do some damage to the boat. I reported it to the website that the cops gave me and to letgo.com
I think this guy is just trying to meet up with people to rob them because he will know they are carrying cash. The boat is always blocked by other cars.

that is weirdly scary.
A) someone is posting from your driveway. Guaranteed you know this person (neighbor, friend, friend of a friend)
B) the ad itself. He's so matter of fact about the stuff
C) the potential of knowing you're stuff if going to get stolen.

Make a deal, go see him, with a police escort.

Internet fraud is out of control, identity theft, credit card fraud, stolen property, meanwhile the list of these crimes apparently law enforcement 'Can't doing anything' about grows exponentially. :eek

Like in this case, you report what's obviously a scam, might take a couple of phone calls to look into, but no, there's a couple of hookers menacing society that's a higher priority :eek

Apparently hauling in hookers makes better press and some overweight bible thumping wife will sleep better knowing that's one less ass on the street tempting her depressed husband.

Sure I get it, no crime has actually been committed yet, I'm not blaming the beat cop --- but to think this is this scammer's first rodeo is ludicrous.

The glaring problem is, we read about these relatively minor cases (Nobody is dead and it doesn't make headlines), we hear them from our friends and neighbors and when reported, the answer is always the same disgusting one. :grumble:

I was amazed after my wife was ass-ended in a hit and run by some gal with questionable residency, same response, sorry we can't do anything.
In fact more amazing is that the cop tried hard to convince me not to even file a report ---- seemingly not wanting to be bothered.

So at what point do millions of these apparently 'Minor crimes' being perpetrated against us daily, become worthy of attention :headscratch:

My wife and I were leaving a store adjacent to a WalMart this past Saturday. In front were Girl Scouts selling cookies. There was a SD Sheriff talking to one of the young scouts, she's describing a bald headed man who just walked up, grabbed several boxes of fucking cookies and had hauled ass into the parking lot and disappeared. You could tell the cop was bored and barely paying attention to the little girl's story, she was even pleading that she had the guy's picture on her phone (One sharp young lady !!) ---- and as he turned to walk away we heard him say, "yes, I saw the picture, thank you, but I'm sorry there's really nothing I can do"

Sorry to vent here in your thread, but damn that pissed me off, so we bought a bunch more cookies and I don't even eat cookies !

I suppose I should have just filled my arms with boxes of cookies and walked away, it's not like anybody can do anything about it :grumble:

Yeah, what we need is more laws, more regulations, I'm sure that'll fix everything. :smackhead

Get a good tongue lock and a couple of cables and wrap them around the wheels frame and axle and a master lock down multiple wheels

Yeah thank! I have it locked down already it's just lame people are the way they are.

You got that right we worked hard for our nice stuff and they just help themselves to it, cut their hands off. My guess is he is just using your boat to scam people who call, hopefully he scams the wrong guy and gets shot.

Did they tell you to report it to IC3?

There's not much you can do, other than message the scammer and tell him you found out about it, and reported it to the police. You discovering the pics was not part of the equation.

Being overwhelmed with cases like this is not the only issue, Felony level theft is now at $950, instead of $300 like it was for years. So, many petty thefts are simply not pursued.

Like mail theft --they value each piece of mail at $1. So usually, they book the mail thief and immediately release them. There was a chick out here who was arrested 3 times in one month for mail theft, and identity theft. Recently, there was two cases charged by the Fed's, but I imagine only because they were part of a larger, organized ring. Many mail thieves steal mail, sort it, and then sell a 6" bundle to another dirtbag in a hotel for $20; who then sells it to the guys who make the fake cards, or they use them.

NextDoor is a great way to easily establish relationships with neighbors, who then can help you look out for each other.

Lastly, another part of the problem is these anonymous app and messaging companies thumb their noses at law enforcement requests. These companies know about half the nation believes asking for a criminal's data is a violation of everybody's privacy. The reality is, complying with LEO requests takes time; it's a cost center. Naive are the sheeple who believe these companies care about subscriber's privacy interests. Profit is their only motive.

We had a neighbor catch a shady guy looking over our fence awhile back. He had a truck with him and another car with driver (possible getaway car?) Now we've got an extra camera on that fence/boat, several locks and this lil guy... All I can hope for is that I'm home if they ever come back.. hehe

I had a friend go through this exact same thing, the supposed seller would meet the potential buyer at the house when he knew the people would not be home. Two crack heads showed up but the guy I new had two of his buddies already there as potential buyer with a truck, trailer etc....the two selling were sketchy as hell so they were ready...once the scammers made the deal and the scammers wanted the cash the two buyers confronted them and three other buddies walked out from behind the neighbors house...so happens my buddy was a retired LEO and his buddies were still on the force, you can guess what happened from there. :) Other than that It looks like either the typical scam or someone is not happy with you and is screwing with you...either way it is bullshit and should be dealt accordingly.

Thanks C-2, always appreciate reading your contributions :thumbsup

"NextDoor is a great way to easily establish relationships with neighbors, who then can help you look out for each other."

I live in a very tight knit rural hood. Several home oriented small businesses, retired guys like me, we've got a lot of eyes around here during the day.

Calling the sheriff normally means you could enjoy a nice lunch while you wait :( So you ask yourself, what can you do really should you see something going down ?

If something looks suspicious, or the neighbor's alarm goes off, we'll check it out, it's usually nothing or a false alarm. Essentially, what we can do seems to be making it obvious you see him or her, making it obvious you're going to snap a pic or three, ask their intentions if possible, but essentially it's a bluff hoping to scare them off. If the guy or gal says FU and drives off with the neighbors Amazon delivery, hopefully get a pic of the plate, but for such a minor $$ amount what I'm hearing is --- the cops will likely not even follow up on it.

We can't shoot em for fear of losing everything in a law suit, not worth risking your own safety and financial repercussions to tackle the prick, so you might as well just wave and wish em a nice day.

No different than watching some ass-clown scumbag walking off with his arms full of Girl Scout cookies, it's frustrating :grumble:

Even with a tongue lock, I wouldn't risk storing a boat or trailer in an unattended driveway, not behind a gate of some kind. Way too risky

Sounds sketchy. I doubt it's anyone you know, or anyone in the neighborhood. You can bluff and call/text the guy saying your neighbor is a cop and they are investigating this

why wouldnt the leos want to be a part of this. Set up the meet and have the leos on standby?

hell i bet if you found a couple leos on the street and talked to them they would get involved?

what the fuck is wrong with this country when we have an easy way to get a bad guy off the street so easy?

I would tell them your very interested in buying the boat but you're working out of the country right now.
You will send him a cashiers check for $2,000.00 to cover the purchase and shippin. Then have them cut you a check for the remaining balance. Lol

Wouldn't it fall under conspiracy to commit a crime?

Nothing will happen your boat I don't think...just scammer preying on people stupider than them...likely just to get phone numbers/email addresses.

Here's one from a while back that contacted me...

No Leo's willing to do a safety check on your boat ? Tell them there could be a empty beer in the cooler and they would setup a stake out ! Reactive policing at its finest

A little cheap tracker would do wonders in your case and give you some piece of mind when you're not there. I think if it were me I would at least arrange to meet in a parking lot or something and not describe who I was. Then just grab photos of the guy, his car, etc then put it on next door, fb, email to the police .....

Lol.. no offense to LEO's on the board but cops are for the most part.. useless in 90% of the situations that you would think you would need them in.

You should get an IP camera on your driveway ASAP!!!

Any way you can store it secure elsewhere for a few days? I would hate for the tweakers to come back thinking its an easy mark. Hopefully they leave you alone!
