RDP folks,

Looking at getting my son a classic car. Would like a '65-'69 Mustang or a '66-'70 Chevelle or El Camino

Outside of craigslist where is a good spot to look?

Thanks in advance

My 2 cents...

Don't buy Anything without having it inspected by someone you know and trust.

Check with this same person to see if They know anyone that has something you're looking for.

Clean early mustang, maybe 20k

Clean Chevelle, maybe 50k

Clean El Co (for who knows what reason, these cars do not hold their value) 15k

Give Jim a call over at @bonesfab He can probably find something for you.

Hemmings is a good place to start, like Joe said however, you really should have a professional check any candidates out before a purchase.

There are consignment/locating services who will track down what you want for a fee as well.

If you were to narrow down your selection to a year/make/model/options you will probably have an easier time of it, the years and models you listed are pretty wide ranging.

I might know of a couple late 60's Camaros if interested. Are you looking for a driver or collection piece?

Maple motors in Tennessee. Find the car you like on there website then go see a full report on that car on YouTube with a test drive and they can ship and have financing

I'm told FaceBook has a popular classified section these days. Not a user but I've heard boats are selling there as well.

Started doing the Pomona swapper 30ish years ago with my FIL. Great deals and a awesome way to spend an early Sunday morning. The last few years before the Vid it was a bunch of cars people threw high prices on to see if they could get a bite. It was also a way for guys to get out of the house. “Honey, I’m going to try to sell the car today”. Gotta get in on the Saturday deals with the sellers or first thing Sunday morning when it starts up to have a chance.

Plenty of shopping by flashlight. Bought my first car there almost 30 years ago. Had interest in the car, but didnt make an offer. Saw him in line to leave and pulled out cash. He didnt want to drive it home, so I got a cool car for a good price.

Sold the car there a few years later.

When I wasnt shopping, we used to just cruise it, for something to do.

No way. ;)

Its either this or I give him my 2014 F150 Lariat
We bought a 74’ Vette for our oldest. He went through back surgery from a wrestling/football injury at 15. (He really wanted a classic car).
We found a good deal on a rust free car. Ran good, stopped and was all around solid. Problems start when the old car stuff kicks in. Vapor lock, cold starts, leaking weatherstripping, worn bushings/belts. I was traveling way too much for daily panic calls. We went for used imports on the next 3... They can do classics their own.

I don't' want to be the one to tell you having a 25k classic for a new driver is a terrible idea. The car is going to get trashed/stolen/bashed etc. and will leave your son stranded on the side of the road. I'm not even gonna get into the indsurance issues or the lack of safety due to air bags or bad brakes.

With that budget how about something like this so you guys have a project to work on that is a blast and reliable and then use the rest of the money for a junker camry or accord?

My 2cents...from a previous Mustang owner, and I was also a teen boy:
If you want a classic, find a stock 6cyl car. They're cheaper on initial purchase. After a few weeks or months, do the brake and suspension upgrades. This will see by time and effort if he's still interested. It also makes the car ready for a motor/trans upgrade. If he hangs in there, still showing interest, build up a motor and trans combo.

Teenage boys are, by nature, a bit on the short end of the patience spectrum. Even if you find a stocker at a decent price, 289 2v car, he can drive it for a bit. If he likes it, and respects it, start looking for "the right car". That way your not out a ton if direction changes.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for you spending your money. I just don't ever like people to spend too much, too soon.

Another thing, avoid cars from NY and FL...never heard a good story that started with "I bought this from a guy in...".

Full disclaimer, my first car was a 65 K code Mustang...in 1992. Lots of lawns and construction slave work...I was 14.

Before you buy your child "old iron" to drive around because we all have this conception of full frame = bad ass safety please watch this...:

It changed my mind too. Put your kid in a new "Honda, Toyota" before allowing them to drive something "old and solid". It's a whole new game with airbags/crumple zones etc.

Or Texas. All of those cars will be flood damaged.

Zero foreign iron for me. Dont need to start a personal decision derailment here its just a personal choice. I have never owned a foreign car

I bought my 18yo a 2004 Tacoma last weekend had 160,000 miles needs a little work but it had a solid v6. Paid $5700 I’ll be in it maybe $7500 when we are finished getting it ready for the road. You are nuts to buy something like that for a 16 year old
