I have noticed a significant increase in 18 wheelers that have either plowed through gaurd rails and ended up in the desert or in a river bed off the side of the road or the 53' behemiths in the sand in the center divider between the east and westbound lanes. What the hell is going on? I see this situation on over half my trips to the river. I travel this route about every 7-10 days. I assume its drivers falling asleep as they are usually single vehicle accidents. I can't imagine the ride when one of these occurs. If the driver lives through it they must have a several second out of body experience as they become awake. I saw one on Friday night heading east around Kelbaker where the truck plowed through the wood and steel guard rail and off into a riverbed below, probably a 20' elevation drop. The guard rail posts sheered off and the 1/8" thick steel folded into an accordion shape. On my return Monday afternoon another 53' footer in the sand in the center divider. That one looked clean but he had to have traveled nearly 300 yards before coming to a stop. CHP was on site and both of them standing out there looking at it?

Do these guys get fired after an incident like this? Again i'm seeing these frequently. Amazing...

I was driving through there yesterday, I never drive the 40, and saw a double fuel tanker rear ended by another semi, totally folded the entire tank. And the recovery of that truck down in the ditch. How the fuck did that idiot get his truck down there? It didn't look like a crash more like he drove it down there? Looked like a flat bet with a big Genset on it.

Syrian refugees turned drivers
Watch them rinse their feet in the truck stop sinks
The correlation can be seen from where they start/routes
No one is discussing it
In a covid freebie world, the low hanging fruit that actually show up to drive will yield consequences

Good for the last minute contractors that get the guardrail repair jobs
Always an upside

I can't fucking stand truckers!!! I know that once upon a time, it was an honorable profession, filled with good dudes. Now, they're fucking POS's that suck ass at what they do. I hate them SOOOO much! I tend to flip out when those cucks block the entire freeway when one truck starts a snail pass at 42 MPH, while the truck he is passing is traveling at 41.8 MPH! My wife really hates the person that I become when that happens. 😡

My official answer for Bobby is, it must be the union drivers.😂😂😂😝

There’s a lot of truth and a lot of fiction with all the bullshit I’ve seen in this thread and I don’t really care to rehash it at this point. Nationality doesn’t have a damn thing to do with Who makes a good driver or not.

Remember the old saying “those who can do, and those who can’t teach”

Most of these giant mega carriers will put you in a classroom and/or riding with a trainee after only six months of experience on the highway. Back when I started you needed 5 to 7 years of experience before they would even consider you for training. Think there’s a problem?🥴

I think they should govern all vehicles to 55 mph now so you can all see what it’s like in these bullshit states like California with their split speed limits and trailering laws.
For now I will just keep doing what I’ve been doing for the last 32 years and if I happen to cross paths with fly-by-wire i’ll hope he’s in a good mood that day.😂

Shit! I am rambling again.😵‍💫

Just stop at the truck stops on your way to the river. Go inside for a meal and your question will be answered.
Buddy is a big wig for a major trucking company. The towel heads will run a truck with three guys in it, 24/7, truck never stops rolling. Some of have gone so far as drilling holes in the floor of the truck and they drop deuces out under the truck while rolling. He says when the trucks are ready to be replaced the value they get for them at the auction takes a big hit because they can never get the stench out of them.

Growing up I wanted to be a trucker........think back, truck drivers were the epitome of Americana, living the dream on the open road. All I did in grade school was draw pictures of trucks. Now, they wear terbins, shorts and sandals with socks.

Some of the worst truck driving I have seen is on the 710 freeway near Vernon. It's awful. They are taking up all the lanes and don't give a fuck

I worked that area before I came out to the desert. That’s a fucked interchange between 710N and 5N, so all the trucks have to get all the way to the left 2 lanes to transition to the NB 5. Complete shit show.

The new breed of truck driver doesnt know shit about driving a truck. They dont know how to use mirrors, no more cb talk to keep traffic flowing (maybe because they dont speak good English) watching movies with feet on the dash while driving and the list goes on and on...............................

I couldn't agree more. I'm sure a good portion of these guys go to "schools" that only teach how to pass the test and nothing about actually driving a rig.

Electronic log books have made things worse i think, if you speed at all it shows. it use to be if you wanted to pass another truck your just put down then hammer and blew by , now you can't go over certain speed or it shows on the log, so say the truck you want to pass is going 53 you can only go a couple of miles an hour faster so now it takes few minutes to get by. as you are slowly going by you now are side by side for a lot longer, any wind, bump in the road, etc is a problem. not a whole lot of room for error on some of the roads, drop one tire off the shoulder and its mister toads wild ride.

See this all the time. They whip out into the left lane cutting off approaching vehicles then pass at 2-3 MPH faster than the semi they're "passing."

Biggest contributor to the truck traffic issue is the skyrocketing demand for new semi drivers - Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe's, FedEx, UPS all are busier than ever and all of them and all the other trucking companies need drivers.

I happen to know that there is truth to this, as I have witnessed it first hand! Seen the shit splattered down the running gear under the chassis, as well as the holes.

I have a serious question for someone that drives a truck for a living! It may help with my anger issues whilst driving around these big rigs.

When on a two lane interstate, climbing a hill, and a truck pulls out to pass another truck, and begins to squeak by him(or her) at their speed plus half to one MPH, is there a reason to jamb up EVERYONE else on the road, to simply pull a hill at a speed fractionally higher than the first trucks speed? If I can't promptly pass, I'll stay tucked behind another vehicle, so as to not fuck over 50 other motorists.

So, is there a reason that this takes place, that I am unaware of, or is it pure selfishness? I'm secretly hoping that there is some valid reason that I'm just not thinking of.

I think a lot of them were previous cab drivers that got pushed out by Uber and Lyft. At that time I started noticing more Indian restaurants in the desert. A friend of mine owns a trucking company and says a lot of them destroy the insides of the trucks.

Being a truck driver is kind of a big thing in that culture now....

I get frustrated, at which time I lash out. Not meaning to attack. And, I think that "truckers" have changed a lot of the past couple/few decades. For the worse. May be lack of pay that attracts fewer quality drivers, or some other issue. I don't care one bit if someone wears a turban! Or has a different religion or beliefs. Its the outwardly aggressive driving and cock blocking freeways for +1MPH passes up long grades! Those sometimes lead to the passing truck not being able to continue to pull a grade at a speed greater than the first truck, at which the pass is reversed at -1MPH by the truck in the right lane. I feel like tension and aggression has built considerably over the past handful of years.

I think that I skipped over the answer to my question, that a previous post addressed. The electronic log, where trucks are governed, and not able to exceed the leading trucks speed by more than a couple of MPH.

I'm sure that guys driving these trucks get extremely frustrated with jackasses in passenger vehicles, too.

I don't get it. I was taught that you don't make someone else tap their brakes.

Every time I see a row of trucks ahead, I speed up and pass to avoid being cut off. I hate when they cut over so fast and cut me off when there's not a single car behind me. They couldn't wait 3 more seconds? They see me coming. At night when they try to do that I rapidly flash my bright at them to blind them and they'll usually retreat until I pass. What really gets me is how they will cut me off with less than 10 or so feet between us to pass, but when they get over, they wait til there's a good 300' in front of the truck they passed and they'll take forever to get back over.

The swerving over for parked vehicles has got to stop. Are they teaching that in trucking schools now? How is more safe to cut me off? Just stay in the damn lane and go straight.

I always thought the "Move Over Law" was intended for emergency type vehicles but now they are moving over for anyone that is parked in the emergency lane. I thought maybe the law changed or something.

Right! I get so infuriated! I know that there is a national push for the "move over or slow down for flashing lights", which LEO'S will (and should) cite for. I think that the issue is that slowing down isn't on the list of what they're willing to do.

Being someone that works on the side of I-40 often (for accidents, fires, etc) I appreciate the moving over! A TON! But it seems so selfish and disrespectful to cut people off like they do! I find myself doing the same thing, but then my wife gets irritated, because I'll try to close gaps quickly, to avoid getting cut off, and my wife doesn't (nor do my brakes) appreciate the rapid closing speed! It takes all enjoyment out of trips. I have to regularly putyself in check, slow down, and just accept that I'm going to get cut off by some turd in an 18 wheeler!

They're pushing it for "any flashing lights" now. LEO'S, fire, DOT, Cal-Trans/ADOT, or even stranded/disabled motorists. So, it's really any vehicle in the emergency lane. Even the dipshits that pull off to stretch their legs, or pee!

If the people making these comments had half a clue. 🙄 I am too tired to argue and it’s useless anyway. I think I’m going to retire at the end of the year yeah, I’ve had enough.

agreed as a driver I hate all the foreigners driving that are giving it a bad rap.

My personal hatred for Russian drivers is through the roof. We have to deal with them on loading them usually and they are retards

If the passing driver slows down at all, he will never gain that speed up till he crests the hill. Miles is money baby. Slow down less miles

No over the road trucks are governed at 55 . speed is recorded the whole time, when you are out of ca trucks don't have the 55mph limit. but if you speed its logged and with some companies thats a no no. plus the po po can check now, but yes you can only drive certain amount of hours
Don't have any of that on my truck. I'm governed at 65 in or out of komifornia

We just drove back from Glendale AZ to Mohave valley, Another accident on the east bound 40 backing up traffic 5-6 miles at a stand still....the entire trip back we saw at least 50 incidents involving Truckers, all FKING ASSHOLE drivers, its like they dont even watch the road swerving everywhere, almost running folks off the road, tailgating at 80+ cutting everyone off...out of about 50 close calls we saw 49 were truckers fault....what was once a great profession has gone to the dogs...

That's pretty selfish, to take that stance above decency to hundreds, if not thousands of motorists every day! Down right shitty, really!

Pit Bull , jet ski , jet boat , wake boat , white conservative , eco boost, no fat chick, bayliner
Super soaker , black socks , flat bill ,
Prius , grads , suck list ?
My hate is directed at disrespectful dick heads! NOT semi truck drivers! Many of them are decent. I go out of my way to slow down to allow lane changes any time that it is prudent. I appreciate the work that you folks do, too! But, the mentality of "screw all of you, this will impose a minor imposition upon me, so I'm going to do only what is best for me" is down right horrible! It's those people that bring down a very necessary, very honorable profession.

Coming back on the 40 this afternoon and saw a truck with large trees (I think) off the side in Newberry Springs. A long set of miles later, malmost to Goff’s was a burnt carcass

The swerving over for parked vehicles has got to stop. Are they teaching that in trucking schools now? How is more safe to cut me off? Just stay in the damn lane and go straight.

This became law years back, it’s either slow down, move over, or get cited. Think this goes for anyone towing. Plus I’m sure LEO’s/construction workers appreciate not being almost ran over or blown over when there isn’t much of a shoulder. Trucks move over in advance, cars get mad, move over too late, cars get mad. Yes there is the slow down, but stand on the side of the road while a rig passes even at 40 MPH and you won’t stand there again. So it’s still courtesy to move over IMO.

It's not just foreigners! It's Spectra3279 right here on the forum, too! Fuck us, they can't give up 1 MPH for the remainder of a grade! Thats nice!

Not the hill I’m willing to die on but maybe the reason he is only doing 1 MPH faster than the truck he is trying to pass up the grade is because he let those “hundreds if not thousands” (as you put it) cars pass prior to starting the grade and none of them letting him over to pass?! So at what point will the passenger car let him in. Not saying you in particular, but most passenger cars are not looking ahead more than a couple car lengths. Most rigs, maybe not the ones slowing you down, are looking miles ahead AND behind. FYI, I too have Mother F’d trucks for similar reasons so not 100% on one side or the other but providing perspective.

Anyway, to the OP and all these accidents, I personally think the Elogs made things worse on top of having a shit selection of drivers to choose from these days. Reason I feel elogs made things worse? As mentioned above by some, now the driver is electronically limited to how long they can run. Driver is forced to force himself to stay awake while the clock is running during his allotted time. The issue is, which has happened to me, you start driving and you’re only hours into your drive and you are just flat tired. Pull over, take a 1-2 hour power nap, get up “hypothetically” adjust your paper log and keep driving safely and well rested. Today not possible. You are forced to push through the time you have before your 10 hour break is needed. Do I have a solution for the elog vs paper log? No. But I sure wish the politicians making these laws would sit in a truck to see what they are doing.

I’m amazed on a daily basis what sort of BS drivers will pull around commercial trucks. It seems like the bigger the truck and or equipment the more aggressive the maneuvers become. This thread is proof we have some of these drivers as inmates. 🙄

So once the clock starts they can't stop? I figured if you have your 10 hour window your could break it down into however long increments you wanted. For example, I'd you wanted to run a 5 hr drive, have a brief rest then another 5 hr drive, is that not the case?

Lol, ppl seem to forget the lig nut rule...

Vehicle with the most lug nuts wins!

One thing to keep in mind is the rule of kinetic energy, double a vehicles weight you double its force, double a vehicles speed you quadruple its force

In a nutshell, that’s how it is. In the old days I used looseleaf logs that I tore up and wrote a new one at the end of the day and I was a much safer driver because I could sleep when I was tired and drive when I was awake. Now drivers are forced to overcome their circadian rhythm‘s to meet the demands of shippers and receivers.

It was much nicer in the old days when I could sneak into downtown Los Angeles in the middle of the night without so much traffic. Can’t do that anymore.

Hours of service rules have been a convoluted mess of bullshit for as long as I can remember. This stuffs never going to change because of the way drivers are paid.

For the most part , what I have noticed
After a 20 year hiatus from driving big rigs
It has not changed that much
Traffic sucks and the CB is quiet . tailgaters and number 2 lane speeders are stupid asses
Shit I barely have my CB on
I stay below 60 and enjoy my day

With all the distracted drivers
Both car and trucks . Most people are good drivers . There seems to be lots of respect to each other .
like in anything , stupid people and idiots. Get most of the attention
Drive safe
