Could a semi dusted air filter cause the motor to go into low power mode? Car ran like it was running out of gas, then it just gave up.

Not likely, I would suspect fuel filter in that case.

Yea check fuel pressure and diagnose from there.

If it has a schrader valve on the fuel rail, you can buy a $30 gauge to check it. 5 min operation.

Does it sound any different than normal when you turn the key and the fuel pump primes?

Fuel pump primes, check the oil and it looks a little thin and smells funny.

By funny does it smell like fuel? Might be a stuck injector. Pull the plugs and see if one is not like the others or smells of fuel.
