I got a crapload of magazines from a RDP'er a few weeks ago. The timeline for boats, designs, and the crash is sobering.
One guy was excited about his construction business having contracts for the next 4 years, this was in 2004. Boat builders were going bigger and more exotic. The John West Ultra collapse was heart-wrenching, from 160 boats a year to no orders for 6 months. Some people did everything right but couldn't weather the storm, it was so brutal. I have a new respect for a lot of builders of the day back then.
The V hull gave way to the cats in a big way and Kevin Spaise and Chris Davidson were covering every minute. The split of the Davidson brothers was tough to watch. Was Darren really that misguided, to put it mildly. I don't want to dig up old shit, but Geezus! Hotboat went from cutting edge to lost in the dark in 2009. So much so they wrote about the difficulties of putting out a magazine, it truly lost it's soul.
I'm about halfway through the stack, then I'm shipping them off to the guy behind me that wanted to go through 'em.
It was neat to see RiverDave's column, I never knew.
The whole period of 10 years or so was exciting, tragic but most of all, defining. I can't wait to read 3 or 4 issues every night in bed.
