Difficult to find one on the west coast, but I’d like to find one if I can.

Anyone know of any out there for sale?

It’d be for a 19 Hallett SS; I managed to fuck up my nearly indestructible 200. A 4 stroke is probably out of my price range, but I’d be ok with an Evinrude too.

I had a 200 Mercury. The oil reservoir cap wasn’t put on correctly by however put oil in it last (my son I’m guessing), so the air didn’t allow the oil to mix with the gas.

My boat, my fault for assuming and not checking and/or making sure it was on right.

Expensive lesson learned…

I've got a good running 200 for sale.... it comes with a couple extra lowers, all the rigging, and an 18' Lavey. Lol!

Hope you find something…been on the hunt myself to repower a toon. Everything I have found is over priced and beat up.
I’ve come across few deals on older bass boats and runabouts that make more sense than just a motor purchase.
Allows to test drive and everything is complete, wiring harness, controls, etc. Pull the motor and sell the boat less power recovering a few bucks.
Just an idea…Obviously has to be the right deal.

Kind of a side question. I am putting together a ss 19 with a 200 merc. How did yours run? What prop are you using?

No, but piston and cylinder damage…. My youngest son talks about just boring it out lol (not sure it’s possible, but I like the way he thinks).

It would be a shame to see someone junk the boat cause it is a really good running hull, but if someone bought it for that and I got the cash.... se la vi (or however the hell you spell that French phrase).

Kind of my thinking. I need a motor not a whole boat. And it’s a nice boat for someone And I want to keep my family boat running but at a cost that makes it sensible.

Any thoughts on a Yamaha 2 stroke?

The 90 degree 2.6 liter engines are OMCs done right. The best engines of that era. Yamaha castings make Mercury look like Russian tractor parts and electrical components typically last the life time of the engines.

Some salt corrosion problems is the only real downside. Nobody complains over here, but they do in Florida.

First thing I did when my 225 PM was out of warranty was to remove the oil injection and premix 36 to 1. Motor ran WFO for 20 years and still ran when I sold it. The Promax is one solid motor without the oil injection.

Best 2 stroke Mercury ever made.

So I found a 1990 200, and the guy will also have a 1988 225 in a little while. Funny enough, the first thing out of the guy’s mouth when I talked to him is that he gets rid of the oil tank…

I’ll keep you guys updated after the install. I figure if he does me right, he’ll get some business from RDP.

Please do keep us updated. Not sure my boat will handle the 225 weight wise (need to check). but something to think about for sure.

Next question for you guys:

I already have a buyer for my old 200 as is. The lower is brand new. Other than that, is there anything else I should try to salvage?

The effed up cylinder is #4…. FYI

Get rid of the oil tank. I just mix at the pump. More reliable.
Totally.

Do you believe there’s anything other than the lower I should try to keep? The cowling won’t work, as I believe my new one will have a one piece not a two.

Thx in advance for any advice.

What are your plans for the motor if you end up keeping the lower unit? I don't need another damn project around my place, but......

It’s either sold to a relative or my youngest son wants me to keep the damn thing so he can mess around with it. Fucking hoarder…. 😁

I built a 19SS with a 200 Evinrude G2 and I was about 78 mph. A jack plate and tabs are necessary to achieve this.

Dropped it off at the yard for a new to me motor. It’ll probably be the 1990 black max:

But a 200 efi with an f block may be in play for 2k more:

Thoughts? Money is an object. I’m no baller.

Efi if you could swing it.
I can swing it, but it costs more and weighs a bit more also (though I’m not sure 30-40 lbs will make much difference.

Why would you do an efi? I just talked with a relative who converted one to carbed.

Any thoughts?

Was waiting on your review from previous post. Didn’t go back and re read but I think the black max is a 175. And now you’re thinking the 200 ???
My old black max and the one I’m getting are 200s. The 200 efi entered the picture because it looks like his buyer flaked. And I’ll pm you some info.

Modifying a 2.4 or 2.5 200 just makes no sense in by book. Any noticeable power increase will kill longevity.

I've beat the shit out of a ff block for going on four years. I've turned that thing 8200 with either a 29 or 31 for 20+ miles at a time. 135 psi, seven petal front with SJ reed blocks, some porting and attention to detail, cast WSM 1.5 mm ring pistons on a one piece with a drag tuner. Probably makes 260+. They are great motors to build on.

Interesting, I ran factory 260s / 280s and were done for at under 200 hours.
Aways broke in right and went the extra mile running AV gas too.

Coated motors barely make it 100 hours. My drag motors when run as advertised are 20 ish. Cast pistons have come a long ways, coatings have come a long ways, understanding port maps that aren't soley based on all the rpms helps a bunch too. The basic 225 pro max port with some help is where to start and will run for a very long time.

Agreed, I currently run a STOCK 225 pro max (240 factory HP as I understand) and has never missed a beat in 10 years probably 300 hours.
That said, if your going to start changing porting, pistons, fuel delivery, fuel ratio, compression ratio, etc. you better know your shit is my point. As you noted even the brand of a piston will spell doom.

Obviously you get it…but not for beginners.
