WTF alpha 1 Gen II has a HOLE

dude cane by the shop today with this hole in his Alpha Gen II. Said everything was great until the motor stalled. I’m thinking it got slammed in reverse going forward. What say you?

You can see the pinion and forward gear in the picture. Reverse gear is towards the rear of the drive and not visible through the hole. Since the gears appear to be in their normal location. I'd say they either hit something or, 1 or more teeth broke off and jammed between the housing and forward gear.
