And no I’m not talking racing motors. 115hp Yamaha vs. Mercury. What would you guys do?

Looking to get into a new pontoon. The dealer stocks boats with Yamaha, or else I’d have to order a boat if I want Merc.

What say you? Pros and cons.

The new 4 stroke mercs are supposed to be very reliable. I would go with one.

Merc for speed. Yamaha for reliability.

Just look in any ocean marina on the boats going 100 miles out.

115 on a pontoon means what 20 mph? The only thing a 115 should go on is a John boat. That being said I would go with the evinrude and the 10 year warranty.

Depending on the size of the toon, one could probably hit 30-35.

Light load I could see 30mph. Put people, toys, ice chests, bimini and fuel your gonna be dragging ass in the low 20's high teens at WOT. For a channel cruiser that's fine but a trip to Topock from the bridge and back is gonna take all day. Not to mention the gas burn at WOT is gonna be over 10 GPH. Outside of my disdain for slow I have to say that I have been impressed by the Evinrude 2 strokes having a 10 year warranty is stellar.

The performance bulletin data is available for all of these outboards. Here are some highlights:

Merc Data Source: https://www.mercurymarine.com/en/us/performance-tests/outboard/
Honda data source: https://marine.honda.com/outboards/performance
Evinrude Data Source: http://www.evinrude.com/en-US/engines/e-tec/75-hp-115-ho.html#tab=1

The Evinrude 135HO is a really impressive smaller outboard take a look at these numbers from the Avalon site (https://www.avalonpontoons.com/about/performance-test-results/):

Avalon 2485 Cruise 24' 2470 lbs dry weight tritoon. Max speed 38.2 mph @5750 RPM with 13.8 GPH and cruise at 16.8 MPH @3000 RPM with 4.5 GPH Burn.

Personally I would be looking for 150-200 hp just to get the cruise speed up a bit.

Good info. I appreciate it. Getting a toon under 21.5’

95% of my boating is limited to doing donuts on a 1.5 Mile Long Lake, so I don’t have much need for faster.

75 hp on my 22' toon is 19 max, minus 1mph for each person that gets on.

Interesting point. I’ve never thought about that. Just always thought it was odd all the saltwater guys run Yamaha’s, but to your point about reliability, makes perfect sense!

Most of the new outboard motors are pretty reliable. East coast guys like the Yamahas the Mercury stuff is popular on Westcoast. And down in Mexico the Mexicans like yamaha.
The Honda motors are probably the most reliable and they were the first ones to pioneer the 4 stroke marine outboards.
That Evinrude G2 is pretty bad ass also. 2 stroke Torque and it has its steering all internal.
